Civil War: war between groups within a country. Dictator: a leader who has absolute power. Cold War: time of tension between the U.S and USSR. (1945-1991)

Vladimir Lenin Takes Over Pushed weak government aside. Wanted a communist government Communism appealed greatly to many people 



Everyone is supposed to be equal (No more rich or poor classes) Lenin told workers/serfs that communism would bring equality

Civil War Communists vs. people who oppose communism. 3 years/millions of lives Communists win Result: Lenin creates Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Lenin jailed/killed people opposed to communism. Lenin dies in 1924

Josef Stalin Comes To Power Even more harsh than Lenin Dictator Didn’t care about the suffering his decisions caused (sent serfs to Siberia who refused to give up their crop). Had millions of people jailed/killed for not supporting his programs.

Cold War Tension between the superpowers (U.S. and USSR) No fighting involved Lasted from 1945-1991

Causes of the Cold War 1.Eastern Europe USSR freed countries in eastern Europe during WWII  Forced countries to become communist  “Iron Curtain”: dividing east and west Germany (Churchill) 2. Soviets tried to expand their power beyond Eastern Europe. -superpowers built powerful weapons to use against 

Collapse of Soviet Union Economy didn’t grow fast enough during Cold War. People didn’t want government control over all parts of life. Mikhail Gorbachev took over in 1985  Allowed more personal freedom  Reduced government control of the economy.
