Mr. Paul Martin Tonsing 6908 Sheridan Ft. Worth, TX 76134 Dear Mr. Tonsing, My name is Bill McFariand and for the past several years I have been gathering information for a book on the 8th Kansas Infantry. I have quite a bit of information on your ancestor Colonel John Martin. He was certainly a remarkable and fascinating individual. I have read the letters that Colonel Martin wrote home during the war and I have seen copies of several military photographs of Martin. I have also seen other material available at the Kansas Research Center in Topeka. Further, I have made several trips to the National Archives to view pension records and other materials there. I recently contacted Ralph Martin, who was very helpful, and he suggested that I contact you. I would be very interested in visiting with you or other members of your family about Colonel Martin and the 8th Kansas. Some of the question I have are: 1. Do you or anyone in your family have any photos of John Martin in uniform? 2. Are there any photos of Colonel Martin's brother James who died during the war? 3. Are there any photos of other members of the 8th Kansas in the possession of your family? 4. Martin sent home souvenirs of the war, including some sketches done by Henry C. Ford of Company H. Ford had formerly worked as an artist for Harpers Weekly. Do any sketches still exist?

5. Ralph Martin suggested that I contact you, Virginia Tonsing, and Rebecca Carlson. Are there other members of your family I might contact? I will enclose xerox copies of the photographs available here in Topeka. If I can be of any service to you here in Topeka, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Bill McFariand 2709 Boswell Topeka, KS 66611 Home Ph. 785-233-3985
