Major causes of Deforestation :1. Population incensement resulting in the demand for food, crops like jute, cotton, sugar , wheat etc. 2. Sleepers for tracks (sleepers-Wooden planks laid across railway tracks, they hold the tracks in position). 3. Each mile of track required 1,760 and 2,000 sleepers By 1890, about 2500 km 0f track had been laid. 4. In 1946, the length of the tracks had been increased to over 765,000km. 5. Land for tea plantation 6. By the early nineteenth century, oak forest was totally cleared/disappearing.
