From the Director Wow! I can’t believe the Texas-sized “Welcome” everyone gave me, Jimmy Rose & all the new members of our community this weekend at our Welcome Dinner and Dance. I am blessed to be serving such an awesome community. Please keep me in your prayers as I continue to settle in to this role and be assured that you are in my prayers. May God continue to bless the UCC! — Fr. Ed Nowak, CSP Now is the time to join the Living Faith Society! The Living Faith Society is a generous group of individuals and families who contribute monthly to the UCC. We rely on this committed income to fund this ministry on a daily basis. We've recently experienced about a 10% decline in monthly giving through the Living Faith Society, which represents about $1,000 a month. We need your monthly support now more than ever! Now is the time to join the Living Faith Society! You can do so by visiting utcatholic.org/donate.php or by filling out a form that can be found next to the bulletins and placing it in the collection basket. If you have questions about monthly giving, please contact Amber Fogarty at [email protected] or 476-7351 x13. Our 100th Anniversary Weekend Celebration! The 100th Anniversary Weekend is quickly approaching! The UCC will be celebrating 100 years of Paulist ministry with a weekend of events on Saturday, Nov. 1st and Sunday, Nov. 2nd. Included in this special weekend will be 2 Masses of Thanksgiving (5:00 pm, Sat. celebrated by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston and Bishop Greg Aymond of Austin; and 10:30 am on Sun. celebrated by Bishop Emeritus John McCarthy), a Cocktail Reception and Gala on Nov. 1st, and a family-friendly picnic on Nov. 2nd! It's going to be a very special weekend in the UCC's history! Flyers with more information can be found at the Front Desk. For more information, please call or email Amber Fogarty at 476-7351 x13 or [email protected]. Have you bought your Gala table or tickets yet? Act soon, as the tables and tickets are selling quickly! You can buy tickets online at http://utcatholic.org/anniversary.php or by placing a check in the collection basket (!!!write Gala tickets in the memo line!!!). Tickets are $150 each, and tables of eight are $2,000. Only 22 tables remain. Don't miss your chance!

Exultation of the Cross

Religious Education Classes for Children We are now forming RE classes for grades PreK through 12 for the 2008-09 school year. For more information regarding the program or to be added to the online community for Children’s RE, contact Michael Burkhart at [email protected] or Anne Gilbert at [email protected]. Our classes meet in the UCC on Sundays immediately following the 9:00 am Mass. As always, we need participation from many parents! We have a small group with small classes and the UCC has no Director of RE, so we ask all parents to seek The Spirit's guidance to contribute to our program. We encourage team or group teaching. If you have any questions, please call Anne Gilbert at 301-4312 or Mary Beck at 502-1225.

Children’s Social Justice Program The UCC will be working with the social justice team at St. Austin’s to provide a social justice program this Fall for Religious Education age children. Join us at St. Austin’s Hecker Hall for The Parable of the Cocoa Farmer and the Good Samaritan at 10:15 am on Sunday, Sept. 28th. Sign up for our 6 week email-based program to learn more about Fair Trade, where chocolate comes from, the Catholic Social Teachings, and how to live in Solidarity: 5minutesperweek.org Contact Michael Burkhart([email protected]) or Nick Jackson([email protected]) for more information. Ministry Training Training for new liturgical ministers - Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Mass Coordinators - will be held this Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, September 16 and 17, as well as Tuesday and Wednesday, September 23 and 24 at 7:00 in the Holy Spirit Chapel. Current ministers also may attend for updating and refreshing. Fr. Ed’s Mission in Calcutta Fr. Ed K. will lead a presentation and show slides from his recent mission trip to Calutta, India after all Masses next Sunday, September 21. He and UT student (and newly baptized Catholic!) Adam Shendelman spent several weeks working with Mother Teresa's nuns - the Missionaries of Charity - at "Kalighat," the home for the dying and the destitute. Thank you for supporting last week’s Black Bag collection. At Mass last week, you gave $716 with more coming in through monthly giving! Thank you! Thank You! A big THANK YOU to everyone who volunteered or wanted more information on the various ministries we have at the UCC. If you signed up, you should be hearing from someone soon. If you haven’t signed up yet, you still can after all the Masses this week!

Make Someone’s Day Come join a group of volunteers who make people happy! On Sunday mornings we carpool to our sister community at the Austin State School for the Mentally Retarded. We accompany residents to a Catholic prayer service we hold in the Chapel. Many of these folks are in wheelchairs and could not come to church without us. For more information, please sign up at the front counter; call Kathy Hackett, 512.928.1776: or email [email protected]

Weekly Reflection Question: What stirs in your heart when you see the cross? In which ways does the cross transform your daily life? Micah 6 Food Pantry UCC participates in the ecumenical Micah 6 food pantry through donation and volunteering on Thursdays and Saturdays. Many of the people we serve are homeless. Don’t forget our “neighbors” who have nothing during the fall. Please bring canned goods and packaged dry goods to Sunday Mass for the baskets near the fountain. We ask that you continue to support the Micah 6 Food Pantry with your generous donations. Contact Jim Harrington at [email protected] for more information.
