“We would love some more volunteers to come in regularly on a weekly or fortnightly basis,” Ms Roberts said. “[It is rewarding] because you become part of the school and get a real sense of achievement. Everyone’s friendly, and they adore children.” When the Village Voice visited Lucas Gardens on the last day of the school term, the gardens were being beautified by a crew of volunteers from IAG Insurance.

This is just one of many initiatives that cements the strong ties between the school and community. Canada Bay Council is also helping out with landscaping works over the school holidays and locally based charity groups Communities for Communities and Rotary have funded facilities and projects for the school. “It’s wonderful, we really value the involvement of the local community,” Ms Roberts said.

COMMUNITIES FOR COMMUNITIES is hosting a Charity Ball to raise funds to employ a part time physiotherapist at Lucas Gardens School. The ball is on Friday July 20 at the Waterview Function Centre in Bicentennial Park, Homebush, beginning at 7pm. Tickets are $150, to book or find out more phone Jacque Weaver on 0419 419 803 or visit www.communitiesforcommunities.com.au. If you would like to volunteer to help at Lucas Gardens, contact the school office on 9744 6461.
