Each lead is actually a pair of electrodes connected to the body on opposite sides of the heart (e.g. lead I, records potential difference between electrodes placed on right arm and left arm).

b. Augmented “ unipolar ” limb leads: These are aVR, aVL and aVF. They are recorded by a special arrangement in the electrocardiograph, which shows potential difference between one limb and mean potential in the other two limbs.
