“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:3

University Catholic Center February 3 -- The Feast of St. Blase (bishop, martyr +316) Blase was the bishop of Sebaste in Armenia. He was martyred during the persecution of Christians by the Roman emperor Lucinius. Blase is said to have been a physician as well as a bishop. A legend tells that Blase saved the life of a boy who was choking on a fish bone. Blase is now the patron saint of all who have diseases of the throat. On his feast day in many parishes of the United States, people have their throats blessed. It's no surprise that this custom coincides with the peak of the sore throat and flu season. Years ago, wintertime illnesses were very dangerous. Before the discovery of penicillin, a person could die from complications of a sore throat. The tradition of blessing throats began at a time when the church's calendar was filled with blessings for the saints' days. Many of these are no longer practiced, but somehow, the custom of blessing throats survived. Two candles are tied in the shape of a cross, and the candles are touched to our necks. We can think of the blessing of our throats as a sign of God's care for every part of us. Ash Wednesday Feb. 6 12:00 pm Mass 3:00 pm Mass 5:00 pm Mass 7:00 pm Ecumenical Prayer Service 9:00 pm Liturgy of the Word All services include the distribution of ashes.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast (ages 18 59) and abstinence (no meat, ages 14 and up). On a fast day the two smaller meals should not be greater than the one main meal - no eating between meals. All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.

Another Good Stop Father Bob Scott, CSP has agreed to return to Horseshoe Bay to serve as pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Church effective this Wednesday. As you may remember, Father Bob served as pastor of Horseshoe Bay from 1995 to 1999. In fact, it was Paulist Father Walter Dalton who founded the parish in 1982. This will mean that we won’t be seeing Father Bob around the UCC very much. We will miss his energy, positive attitude and warm smile. In his fiftyeighth year of ordained ministry, he continues to respond with a hearty “Here I am, Lord” whenever he is called upon to serve. Let’s keep him in our prayers, and learn from his generous spirit. I think you’ll agree with me – Father Bob is one amazing man. – Father Dave. SAVE the DATE! The UCC Lenten Renewal Workshop will be Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9. This two day workshop is open to the entire UCC community. Paulist Fr. Paul Robichaud will be our presenter and facilitator. Father Robichaud is the Paulist Historian and also serves as the Postulator for the Cause of Father Isaac Hecker, the Paulist founder. The cost for the twoday Lenten workshop which includes 3 meals will be $10. For registration information please check at the front desk.

Be Someone's Friend Come join a group of volunteers who make people happy! On Sunday mornings we carpool to our sister community at the Austin State School for the Mentally Retarded. We accompany residents to a Catholic prayer service we hold in the Chapel. Many of these folks are in wheelchairs and could not come to church without us. For more information, please sign up at the front counter or contact Kathy Hackett at 512.928.1776. Fr. Hecker Quote of the Week: Do not say that your state in life does not offer the means of sanctifying your soul, open your eyes and dare to meet its duties and responsibilities like a Christian. Everyone is invited to the UCC Lenten Soup Suppers which will be held from 6:30-7:30 pm Fridays during Lent starting Feb. 8. Come join us for a simple meal, a social justice message and wonderful fellowship. Please bring a bowl and a spoon, and some bread to share. We are in need of 3 or 4 cooks each week to make a meatless soup, each preparing about 20-30 servings. If you are interested in preparing a soup for one of the Fridays, please contact Michael Burkhart at [email protected]. Be a part of UCC history! Help us capture the rich history of the UCC through the restoration of the UCC archives in the anniversary scrapbook project. We need volunteers to help us document, organize, and create scrapbooks of the history of the Catholic Center. Please contact Vanessa Mena at [email protected] or 512-476-7351 ext. 23 by February 15th to be a part of this team. El Salvador Immersion Trip Thanks You for Your Support! Last weekend the El Salvador Spring Break Trip made $918.75 at their Bake Sale and Adopt-AMissionary. Thank you so much for supporting the trip financially and with your prayers! If you were unable to support last weekend, feel free to contribute at the bake sale at St. Austin on Feb. 9 & 10, during the March Black Bag Mass collection, or by dropping off a check at the UCC front desk. Guys--you want to exercise your spiritual muscle? All men are invited to join us as we look at what it means to be Men of Virtue on Wednesdays at 7 pm in the St Matthew Room starting this week. As Men of Virue, we're called not just to do the "right thing" but really develop an attitude of the Gospels. What? You're not perfect yet? Good. Come and work out with us. Men of Virtue, Wednesdays, 7 pm St. Matthew Room. Which of the beatitudes do you consider to be your strongest? Which is the greatest challenge for you? How can you continue to grow? 2
