Welcome to the 11th Jakarta International Film Festival!
Selamat datang di Jakarta International Film Festival ke-11!
This year, JiFFest begins its second decade.
For the last decade, JiFFest has grown along with Indonesian film. From 4 in 1999 when JIFFest was held for the first time, the number has grown to around 100 by now. Since 2006, JIFFest has created its own Indonesian Feature Film Competition with foreign film professionals as juries.
JiFFest then grew into a showcase of Indonesian film development for international film industry. From visiting curators of worldwide film festivals, Indonesian films started gaining recognition in international level, as proven by 4 Indonesian films screened at Berlinale earlier this year. JiFFest’s own JiFFest Script Development Competition & Workshop (JSDC) has given birth to today’s best talents in filmmaking, such as Wahyu Aditya (2004), World Champion International Young Creative Entrepreneur of the Year (2007); Tumpal Tampubolon (2005), Asian Young Filmmakers Fellow Korea (2008); Salman Aristo (2006), writer of Ayat-Ayat Cinta (2007), Laskar Pelangi (2008) and Garuda Di Dadaku (2009); Yuli Andari Merdekaningtyas (2006), director of Suster Apung, winner of Eagle Awards Metro TV (2006), and many more. Such achievement propels us to maintain our aim to be a platform of appreciating and getting education from films. We remain dedicated in bringing the best of worldwide films, including those from ASEAN, and Madani Film Festival, an Islamic themed program that we create together with rumahfilm.org, of which we will run the event as a separate festival next year. However, more than film screenings, sidebar events in JIFFest often serve as alternative education in film education. Thus, the presence of Christian Scheurer (visual consultant for The Matrix) or Petr Lom who recorded Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad’s activities is something not to be missed. Both discussion panel on the topic of Film Promotion & Marketing and the launch of Amir Muhammad’s book “Yasmin Ahmad’s Films” are also worth attending. At last, JIFFest is ready to start its journey this year. Starts in Belitong, the backdrop of our opening film SANG PEMIMPI, making a history as the first Indonesian film featured as JIFFest opening film, and ends in New York through our closing film, NEW YORK I LOVE YOU. In between the two, 25 countries are being represented in our selection of high quality films. Welcome to JiFFest, welcome to Blitz Megaplex Grand Indonesia, the only screening venue for this year’s festival. Have a good festival! Lalu Roisamri Festival Director
New York lewat film penutup kami, NEW YORK I LOVE YOU. Selamat berfestival! Letters to the President Dir.: Petr Lom
Iran. 2009. Documentary. 74 min. Color. Beta SP. Persian (with English subtitles) DEC 5 / BLZ 11 / 18:30 (by invitation only) • DEC 7 / BLZ 11 / 15:30 Every year nearly 10 million Iranians send their letters to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with hopes of better lives. Despite his growing popularity, the president’s populist policies are yet to prove themselves since most Iranians are still living in poverty. Petr Lom, the director of the film, was allowed to accompany the president on several countryside trips (the only foreigner given such access), and the result is an astounding look of Iran beyond the news. Petr Lom is an independent documentary director and producer. Entirely self-taught, he directs, shoots and edits his own films. He is a former academic with a Ph.D. in political philosophy from Harvard University. His previous films are BRIDE KIDNAPPING IN KYRGYZSTAN (2004), ON A TIGHTROPE (2007), YOU CANNOT HIDE FROM ALLAH (2007). The latter two films will be screened in JIFFest this year. Petr Lom will attend the screenings of the film. (screened together with YOU CANNOT HIDE FROM ALLAH)

Introduction : Madani Film Festival Since the first time JIFFest was held, Islamic-themed films have always had their places in our line-ups. Islam remains one of the widely discussed subjects around the world, and films about Islam that come from both Islam-dominated countries and non-dominated ones continue to draw interests among our audiences. It was not until last year that we put up a special section on Islamic-themed films. This year, we are proud to introduce Madani Film Festival, a special film festival on films about Islam from around the world. The select international films in this festival are those that touch on the lives of Muslim around the world. The films will ideally expand and enhance general public knowledge on different sides of Muslim unlikely displayed or heard in other media. We believe that through films this issue will echo more in minds and hearts of the audiences. The festival, co-organized by Rumah Film (http://www.rumahfilm.org), is integrated as part of this year’s JIFFest programming selection. However, we plan to feature this as a separate festival next year, hoping that more audiences will discover different sides of Islamic lives worldwide. Have a good time in Madani Film Festival! Sejak pertama kali JIFFest diselenggarakan, film-film bertema Islam hampir bisa dipastikan masuk dalam jadwal pemutaran kami. Isu seputar Islam itu sendiri selalu menjadi pembicaraan hangat, dan film-film tentang Islam baik dari negara-negara Islam maupun negara-negara lainnya selalu menarik perhatian penonton JIFFest. Tahun lalu, kami menggelar sebuah seksi khusus pemutaran film-film bertama Islam.

A few months ago I attended a screening of shorts that was held outdoors, under a half-completed highway. It was organized by a bunch of friends. It was raining and the ground was muddy, but dozens of people stayed back to watch, and feast on the food too. All the shorts were in Tamil, the smallest of the main languages in Malaysia. The screening reminded me so much of how ‘independent cinema’ in Malaysia used to be, before people started getting too interested in silly things like foreign film festivals or box-office returns. A lot of the fun has been sucked dry, which is one of the main reasons I now publish books! There’s nothing like retreating to a 19th century medium to recharge oneself. All except one of these shorts are being presented outside the country for the first time. I hope you dig them!

Since 1990, The Substation has worked with some of Singapore’s most critically acclaimed artists, writers and intellectuals, as well as younger and emerging artists. In addition, we are committed to facilitating artistic dialogue between countries in the region and the world, and forge closer ties with our international counterparts. Programme Write-up: The spaces in-between can be found everywhere; on the pavements, between text, through the eyes... Small fissures that rupture our realities erupt from time to time. Fleeting moments that force us to stare into these in-between spaces that are so hard to fill with words.

Indonesian Feature Film Competition (FREE Screening) INTRODUCTION Two opposite things are apparent in Indonesian film scene in 2009: one is the fixed formula that leads to repetition in theme, character and plot, and on the other end is the product diversification that tends to be stronger than ever. With a particular attention to the latter, some production companies have made their second line companies to make products appealing to the mass. In some cases, this leads to putting out instant films with low production values in the market. In other cases, some try to revive Indonesian film genres of the past with contemporary language of filmmaking. In addition, emerging names keep popping up in film conversation, as they may be lured by the growing prospect of film business, or simply by ideas they are dying to tell. The new filmmakers opt for popular approaches in hope that their films can be seen by large number of audiences. The effort to redefine the genre goes in sync with other films that opt to remain static in their artistic achievement. Alas, the spirit to break through the convention by these new films remind us that often, success cannot always be measured by box-office receipts. In this year’s 11th JIFFest, Rumah Film helps selecting Indonesian films short-listed for Indonesian Feature Film Competition. Aside from Best Film, a new rule for Best Director award will only be given for a first or second time director. We hope that the award will encourage more new talents to come. Jakarta, December 2009 - www.rumahfilm.org

A film production team leaves Jakarta for Bantul, Yogyakarta to prepare for a shoot. Their big-city attitudes spoil the sacred area on their shooting location. The leading female actress is suddenly possessed by spirits and eventually disappears from the location. A local paranormal tells them that the sacred world is disrupted by an unknown cause. Worse, having the team there does not solve anything, since they are forever stuck in the mixed-up world.
The film tells the story of Guntur, a young boy living in a remote village, who wants to be a professional badminton player just like the legendary Indonesian badminton player Liem Swie King, whom he and his father admire. Yet, Guntur’s hardworking, occasionally stern yet loving father never plays easy on Guntur, who, against all odds, keeps marching in with his dream to follow the King’s steps and make his fellow villagers proud of him.

In the city of Minangkabau, West Sumatera, Merantau is a form of “rite of passage” compulsory for every young man. Yuda (Iko Uwais) has to leave the comfort of his hometown, his sibling (Donny Alamsyah) and his doting mother (Christine Hakim) to undergo the tradition. He goes to Jakarta in hope for a better life. Little does he know about the city’s toughness, and through a series of fateful encounters, Yuda has to risk his lives against webs of numerous crooks wanting his life.
