Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 27, 2008

The Kingdom of God is at hand.

Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD. — Psalm 27:14

University Catholic Center Father Isaac Hecker’s Cause: The Roman Catholic Church is able to select a few individuals from the great number of faithful men and women who have lived and died, to provide examples of how one should live out the Christian life. The Paulist Fathers have proposed Father Isaac Thomas Hecker (1819-1888), the founder of our community for sainthood. Hecker was a convert, a mystic, an evangelist, a pastor and a spiritual teacher. The journey to sainthood is a long one. At the opening ceremony on January 27th in New York, Father Hecker will receive the title, “Servant of God.” Evidence will be gathered and his life will be examined. From here the inquiry will go to Rome and ultimately to the Pope for his decision. Please pray for a successful outcome and that through Father Hecker’s intercession, God will act to bring about a healing or favor in the lives of one of our brothers and sisters. Father Paul Robichaud CSP Postulator, The Cause of Isaac Thomas Hecker

Be Someone's Friend Come join a group of volunteers who make people happy! On Sunday mornings we carpool to our sister community at the Austin State School for the Mentally Retarded. We accompany residents to a Catholic prayer service we hold in the Chapel. Many of these folks are in wheelchairs and could not come to church without us. For more information, please sign up at the front counter or contact Kathy Hackett at 512.928.1776. Fr. Hecker Quote of the Week: The reconciliation of obedient faith and intelligent liberty is the problem of the age. Lent is just around the corner and we will be having our community Lenten Soup Suppers again on the Fridays during Lent. The soup for these suppers is provided by students and resident community members of the UCC. We are hoping to have about 18 soup makers during lent this year, each providing approx 20-30 servings. If you can help make soup for one of the meals, please email me, Michael Burkhart, at [email protected]. Social Justice Team Hosts Voter Registration Drive "In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral ob-ligation. As Catholics, we should be guided more by our moral convictions than by our attachment to a political party or interest group. In today's environment, Catholics may feel politically disenfranchised, sensing that no party and few candidates fully share our comprehensive commitment to human life and dignity. Catholic lay women and men need to act on the Church's moral principles and become more involved: running for office, working within political parties, and communicating concerns to elected officials."

If you are not registered to vote in Travis County, register after all masses today. It only takes a moment and it will allow you to vote in the Texas primaries on March 4. Stop by the table, too, to learn more about what the Church says about faithful citizenship. Join us for our first CFC Youth meeting of 2008. It will be held in the St. Francis Room at 7pm on Monday, January 28th. Come and join us for some great Praise and Worship and meet some new friends. We hope to see you there! Catholicism 101 is back! The next session of Catholicism 101 is back--focusing on the sacraments and how we celebrate our Catholic faith. Everyone is welcome to join us on Tuesday nights at 7pm in the St. Mark's Room upstairs. 2

Guys--you want to exercise your spiritual muscle? All men are invited to join us as we look at what it means to be Men of Virtue on Wednesdays at 7 pm in the St Matthew Room starting this week. As Men of Virue, we're called not just to do the "right thing" but really develop an attitude of the Gospels. What? You're not perfect yet? Good. Come and work out with us. Men of Virtue, Wednesdays, 7 pm St. Matthew Room. The first disciples left their work behind to follow Jesus. What are you willing to "leave behind" to continue following Jesus?

Compass Bible Study! Meeting on Thursday nights from 7-8 pm in the Mother Teresa Room, Compass is a fun and laidback way to read scripture and get a little more out of Mass. Every week we spend an hour discussing the next Sunday’s readings and sharing our faith. We are student run, student led, and totally low time commitment, so drop by whenever you can. Come hang out with us this Thursday!
