ELCC STANDARD 5 ETHICAL CODES FOR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS John Dively Eastern Illinois University Robert Marshall Western Illinois University Standard 5.0: A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.
5.1 Acts with Integrity a.Candidates demonstrate a respect for the rights of others with regard to confidentiality and dignity and engages in honest interactions. 5.2 Acts Fairly a.Candidates demonstrate the ability to combine impartiality, sensitivity to student diversity, and ethical considerations in their interactions with others. 5.3 Acts Ethically a.Candidates make and explain decisions based upon ethical and legal principles. Assignments for Assessing Content Knowledge Content Assignment #1: Students will review selected Ethical Codes for School Administrators. They will be expected to write a reflection paper in which they analyze these codes including common themes and patterns of conduct. In addition, they will create an original personal Code of Ethics that will consist of no less than three rules. 89

Content Assignment #2: Students will be expected to “brief” selected court cases and summarize selected statutes and administrative rules. In addition, they will assess how these sources promote and support ethical behavior and/or discourage unethical behavior. Assigned sources will address one or more of the following: Integrity, Fairness, Ethics, Confidentiality, Dignity, Diversity, Honesty, Directness and Impartiality. Assignments for Assessing Application Knowledge Application Assignment #1: Utilizing the lessons learned in content assignments 1 and 2, students will be expected to develop a staff inservice training related to Integrity, Fairness and Ethics. Application Assignment #2: Utilizing the lessons learned in content assignments 1 and 2, students will be given an in class “ethics” test that will include real-life scenarios related to Integrity, Fairness and Ethics. Application Assignment #3: Utilizing the lessons learned in content assignments 1 and 2, students will create an “ethics” test that will include real-life scenarios related to Integrity, Fairness and Ethics.
