CC2413 Fundamental Psychology for Health Studies Supplementary Exercise: Identifying Specialty Areas in psychology To provide you with an opportunity to identify how various perspectives influence psychologists in specialty areas, read the following descriptions and try to identify which type of psychologists and/or major psychological perspective(s) (psychodynamic, behavioral, humanistic, cognitive, biopsychological, evolutionary, sociocultural) each of them is employing in his or her scientific research or practice.

Dr. Hung is a neuropsychologist who conducts research on patients who have brain injuries due to chemical
exposure. He uses several mental tasks that measure a person’s memory and attention span while he or she is undergoing a brain scan. Through this research, Dr. Hung is able to determine that exposure to certain chemicals destroys certain brain regions responsible for memory and attention. Dr. So is a personality psychologist who studies hidden motives for aggressive personality traits. She

Dr. Chen is a/an clinical/counseling psychologist who works with clients who have phobic of deep water (e.g.
unable to learn swimming). She has found phobic clients tend to have more catastrophic thoughts when touching water than non-anxious clients. If the anxious clients participate in a treatment aimed at challenging their anxious thoughts, however, they can learn to stay in water with fewer catastrophic thoughts and less anxiety.
