2009 - THE YEAR OF NINER - PRODUCT CATALOG

Niner It’s more than just a name. It’s our passion. The 29” wheeled bike isn’t just a token in our line-up. It is our one and only love, our heart and soul, out there on the trail. It’s passion for a wheel size we believe in, for impeccable designs & for exquisite ride quality. it’s a passion we want to share with you on every ride. Welcome to 2009. The year of Niner

2009 - THE YEAR OF NINER - OUR MISSION

THE QUEST FOR PERFECTION

WHY WE DO IT

THE YEAR OF NINER It’s been a while since we began working on The Big Revolution and during that time we have never stopped thinking about big wheels and how to make them better. It’s all we do, and it gives us unprecedented focus on the subject; no kids’ bikes, no road bikes, nothing to dilute our purpose. The Big Revolution is our endeavor to make the best frames and accessories for 29” wheels… only. With more and more riders experiencing the joy of The Big Revolution, we hope that 2009 will be the year that you do, too.

We’re not corporate men seeking the fastest possible way to make the most amount of money. We don’t wear suits to work; some of us don’t even own one. We’re riders, all of us, and we’re building the kind of bikes we want to ride in the hopes that you do to. We believe wholeheartedly in The Big Revolution, and 29” wheels have created the spark that is Niner. The larger wheels re-invigorated our affection for mountain biking. It was never about being different, or traveling the road less traveled. We started Niner because we believe that 29” wheels are superior. We believe that the benefits FAR outweigh the drawbacks, and we’ve staked our entire company on it. For us, it’s more than a business; it’s a passion.

It’s not enough, really, to just make a great product. That product has to be backed up by a company who believes in it’s products AND in the people who have purchased them. It’s these people who make the company what it is, and without them, well, The Big Revolution would stop turning. Our goal is simple: make the best frames and parts we can and then back them up with unmatched customer service. It seems simple, really, but it’s so much more than simple. It’s fun, hard, long, fast, short, driven, frenetic days punctuated by pure unadulterated riding heaven. That’s what The Big Revolution means to us. What does it mean to you?

Since you never know when things will go pearshaped, we design our frames to be easily serviced with replacement parts.

2009 - THE YEAR OF NINER - WHO ARE WE?

REAL SUPPORT FROM NINER

REAL RIDERS OWN NINER

REAL RIDERS RIDE NINERS Cobwebs belong in neglected corners, not on bicycles. Luckily for us, our riders feel the same way. Niner riders don’t see the week as a group of days, but as a collection of potential dirt adventures. Fast-paced after-work rides, racing the looming sunset, Saturday spins with the same friends who taught you that the best roller coasters are made of dirt, Sunday jaunts in the woods with the family in tow - our bikes may be beautiful enough to hang above the mantelpiece, but the only thing collecting on the top tube will be lots and lots of dirt.

Niner didn’t spring forth from a spreadsheet or corporate boardroom – it was born on the trail. Niner is the brainchild of Chris Sugai and Steve Domahidy, two long-time riding buddies whose obsession with bikes couldn’t be satiated by what was currently on the market. This passion keeps them up late at night, breathing life into new ideas and wakes them up in the morning to take those ideas onto the trails. They know that at the end of the day, an idea is only as good as the ride it produces.

Being a part of the Niner community doesn’t start at the cash register and doesn’t end when you walk out the bike shop door. On the trail, the Niner community is diverse and friendly. Don’t be surprised to receive a ton of comments, questions and smiles – Niner bikes tend to generate conversations. Off the trail, you can count on Niner for great customer service. Once you’ve found the bike of your dreams, we back it with a solid warranty and a wealth of information. Have questions? Want to give feedback? Contact us, we’ll be here. Niner’s founders, Chris and Steve. Niner was founded on the trail, and some of our best ideas come together on long rides.

2009 - THE YEAR OF NINER - WHO ARE WE?

HERE’S A SECRET: Working at Niner is the ultimate bike geek’s dream. Not only do we get to play with the latest and greatest toys, but often we have the opportunity to work hand in hand with some of the bicycle component companies WE ADMIRE MOST. THE RESULTS OF THese COLLABORATIONs ARE GROUND-BREAKING new products for The Big Revolution. These NEW products help all 29er riders, not just Niner owners, and we wouldn’t have it any other way – if you’re riding a 29” wheeled bike, you’re experiencing the very joy that founded this company. THE BIG REVOLUTION IS AN INDUSTRY-WIDE EVENT AND WE ARE PROUD TO BE A PART OF IT.

2009 - THE YEAR OF NINER - EXPANDING THE BIG REVOLUTION

WHEEL SIZE >> AND THE SCIENCE OF HAULING ASS Sometimes the reasons are too esoteric to put into words. Sometimes riding is believing. No matter what we say to you here, we challenge you to go test ride a Niner at your local Niner dealer and see for yourself. Talk to a Niner owner and we guarantee that the owner’s response will be more information than you asked for. Life changing? Maybe. We’ve heard it before. >> The basic concept of the larger diameter is simple: it will keep your wheels on top of oncoming obstacles. Rather than riding IN the terrain, you’ll be riding ABOVE it, gaining more control and stability on even the roughest trails. Think of the difference between a skateboard wheel and monster truck tire. The skateboard wheel can come to a grinding halt on a pebble while the monster truck wheel can crush granny’s Oldsmobile. Yes, this example is a little extreme, but you get the idea. >> The larger wheel offers increased centrifugal force, which in turn improves the bike’s stability. The extra three inches also increases the amount of tire contacting the ground at any one moment, meaning enhanced tire bite. Dump a Niner into a corner at full speeds and you’ll find that the unparalleled grip and stability will hold to lean angles you never thought possible. >> Niner didn’t just stuff larger wheels on to an existing chassis. It required a lot of work and testing to dial in the geometry to feel right in all situations. Our design parameters from the beginning were to design a bike that didn’t require a learning curve. Since all we do is 29ers, we had to get it right. Expectations were understandably high. The result: Niner’s dedication to The Big Revolution has been critically acclaimed by some of the top bicycling magazines in the world.

Function first, but form closely follows. Attention to detail gets us fired up and everything we do is designed by Niner for Niner. We don’t believe in offthe-shelf solutions

We pride ourselves on not only using some of the best materials made for bicycles, but working closely with their engineers to provide tubing designed to meet our specific needs. We believe Easton and Reynolds are cool partners to have.

2009 - THE YEAR OF NINER - BIG WHEELS AND THE NINER PHILOSOPHY

Our steel headbadge provides essential reinforcement of the critical headtube area. Nah, it just looks way cooler than a sticker.

W.F.O. 9 >> Wide Full Open Wide, Full Open. That’s what the name means. Let ‘er go, full throttle, don’t slow down for anything, that’s what the name implies. With 5.5” of plush CVA™ suspension technology underfoot, there’s nothing stopping those 29” wheels except the human instinct to live another day. >> The W.F.O. 9 went through exhaustive testing and refining, including a first for a 29er frame: a tapered headtube for increased front end stiffness and strength. We thought about all of the ways people might take advantage of having 5.5” of travel coupled with a 29” wheel, and we designed the W.F.O. 9 to handle them all. A custom S-bend hydroformed downtube allows the use of both coil and piggyback shocks, offset bottom linkage makes room for an ISCG mount, making this frame the first 29er to be compatible with the all new SRAM Hammerschmidt system and other chain guide systems and an optional 150mm rear spacing increases rear wheel strength and stiffness. Best of all, build it how you want. Order the W.F.O. 9 with 135 or 150 rear spacing and then choose from our shock options or order without a shock. >> Whatever your needs, from aggressive all mountain to big hit, the W.F.O. 9 will keep you pinned all the way down some of the gnarliest terrain you can throw at it.

R.I.P. 9 >> Roll In Peace Why would we mess with a frame that has garnered applause from all 5 of the major US mountain bike magazines, including Best 29er of 2007 and Consumer Choice Award? Because at Niner we believe we can always do better. >> The all new, redesigned R.I.P. 9 for 2009: same travel, same weight, drastically increased stiffness. Our CVA™ suspension technology still gives the rear wheel 4.5” of smooth, efficient, active suspension travel while the geometry has been tweaked to utilize the latest 120mm travel forks – giving the R.I.P. 9 that perfect all-mountain balance. >> Niner has redefined its award winning suspension frame from the ground up maximizing new design and production technologies. From the head tube to the rear drop out, Niner picked over every single detail and asked “can it be done better?” Taper steerer tube technology at the head tube, hydroformed top tube and down tube, and over 10 forged or extruded parts on the R.I.P. 9 all went through a painstaking process of FEA, mechanical stress tests and real world testing to be as light and as strong as possible. The result: increased stiffness everywhere without a weight penalty. >> The R.I.P. 9 will re-awaken your passion for what all mountain is all about.

JET 9 >> Race-Ready Full Suspension The JET 9 is our fast, light, race-ready full suspension bike. Designed around the same award winning CVA™ suspension system found on our other suspension frames, the JET 9 features 80mm of plush, fully active travel. >> Speed was the main design concept of the Jet 9, and the geometry is focused on a balance between stability and maneuverability. The 72° head tube angle is based on an 80mm travel FOX fork and is designed to give the same precise steering as our hardtail frames. All linkage pivots are outfitted with full complement sealed cartridge bearings for a smooth, friction-free suspension, and a custom valved FOX RP23 shock offers superb bump compliance and damping. New forged linkage increases strength and stiffness without any penalty in weight. >> 80mm of travel combined with a 29” wheel creates an amazingly smooth ride at an incredibly respectable weight, making the JET 9 the perfect weapon for everything from your local race scene to the all day epic. If it’s speed you are looking for, the Jet 9 will get you from zero to hero in the skip of a heartbeat.

M.C.R. 9 >> Magic Carpet Ride The M.C.R. 9 is built from the ground up to give you nothing short of a Magic Carpet Ride. Featuring our proprietary Reynolds 853 tubing and custom s-bend rear seat stays and chain stays, the M.C.R. 9 smooths out even the roughest of trails without the weight penalty of other steel frames. >> Our proven Niner geometry uses short chain stays and a steep head tube angle to keep the wheelbase compact, making the bike maneuverable around even the tightest hairpins, while the larger wheels help to increase high-speed stability, creating a fast and nimble ride. A radically sloping top tube makes room for the family jewels and the disc-only frame means you’ll stop on a dime. Tubing is drawn out for each frame, and external, as well as internal, wall thicknesses have been tweaked to produce the best possible ride quality for each frame size. Everything about this frame was thought through, including tire clearance for fat tires and downtube clearance from pesky high fork crowns. >> The M.C.R. 9 is the perfect go-anywhere bike that will keep you in the saddle and more comfortable for the long haul. The superlative quality of Reynolds 853 steel tubing with Niner-specific geometry and the stability of the 29” wheel offer a ride quality unsurpassed in any other production hardtail frame.

S.I.R. 9 >> Steel Is Real The S.I.R. 9 is the most versatile bike in the Niner stable, fusing the “steel is real” feel of Reynolds tubing with the ability to run the frame as either a geared bike or single speed. The S.I.R. 9 uses the same custom drawn Reynolds 853 tubing as the M.C.R. 9 and combines it with Niner’s ultra-light eccentric bottom bracket. Custom “breezer” style forged dropouts have a replaceable alloy derailleur hanger and come with an insert piece for running the bike as a single speed to eliminate the unnecessary derailleur hanger for a clean look. >> Niner’s own EBB, at 100 grams, is the lightest eccentric bottom bracket on the market. In addition to being light, it’s extremely functional. The EBB has more swing than any other EBB, over a full link, so you will never have to hunt down a half link to get correct chain tension and vertical dropouts mean you’ll never have to futz with the disc brake to remove the wheel. >> The S.I.R. 9 is truly a do-everything frame. Run it single speed at your local race, then convert it to a full gear set to do the Trans-Alp. Want a 1 x 9? No problem. Or, if you’re just not sure, the S.I.R. 9 will give you the option of trying it all.

AIR 9 >> Light, Agile Ripper The AIR 9 is our super light geared-only frame utilizing custom drawn Easton GX2 Scandium. Combining a truly advanced proprietary alloy with higher strength properties than 7005 series aluminum with the rare earth element of scandium, Easton achieved the impossible: a super lightweight tube with a compliant ride characteristic. Blending Easton’s tubing with custom drawn and shaped rear s-bend chain stays and seat stays, the Air 9 is a light, agile ripper of a frame that offers a surprising amount of comfort to the long haul. >> Niner worked directly with Easton engineers to dial in the Air 9’s tube set, including the custom bent Niner down tube, which strengthens the head tube/down tube junction while simultaneously increasing fork crown clearance. Chain stays and seat stays have maximum tire clearance and heel clearance, and the top tube is radically sloped to allow for better stand-over height. >> Whether you’re a racer or a fan of lightweight, high-tech bikes, the Air 9 delivers the goods in a stunning, wicked fast masterpiece that combines the best Easton tubing with Niner’s proven geometry and gives it to you with the hope that you will set it free.

ONE 9 >> Lightest 29er Singlespeed The ONE 9 is the lightest production 29er single speed frame on the market. Made with the same custom drawn Easton GX2 Scandium as its geared brother, the One 9 delivers high performance through advanced tubing and tubing manipulation. From the outset, the One 9 had seemingly simple design objective: create the best-riding single speed possible. This meant that we wanted a blazing fast frame, with no discernible flex at the bottom bracket or through to the rear wheel without creating an overly harsh ride. We went to Easton, and worked directly with them on the tube set to meet these goals, creating a frame that did exactly what we were after: a fast, nimble, but comfortable ride. >> In addition to the front triangle, the rear s-bend chain stays and seat stays do more than look good. The tubing has been shaped for maximum horizontal stiffness while still allowing for some vertical compliance. Rounding out the package is Niner’s own super light eccentric bottom bracket, allowing for easy wheel removal with the disc brake and versatility in EBB positions (high or low) to tune your ride for your terrain and riding style. >> The One 9 fuses the most technically advanced tube set on the market with the simplicity of a single speed and proven Niner geometry to give you a completely fresh riding experience. No chain chatter, no gears, just pure, unadulterated fun.

2009 - THE YEAR OF NINER - ONE 9

E.M.D. 9 >> Eat My Dust The E.M.D. 9 (Eat My Dust) is the least expensive frame in the Niner lineup, but this frame went through the same design process and had to meet the same design expectations that we require from every Niner frame. Even though we were using a less exotic material, it was our primary goal with the E.M.D. 9 to overcome the idea that all aluminum frames are harsh. Starting from scratch, we developed a 7005 series tube set that met these needs. In addition, the rear triangle receives the same s-bend curves as the Air 9, allowing for some vertical compliance of the rear wheel, meaning your body doesn’t have to take it all. >> The E.M.D. 9 is finished off with the quality you have come to expect from Niner, with all of the attention to detail that every Niner frame gets, including the stainless steel Niner head badge, reamed and faced head tube and bottom bracket, chased BB threads, and faced disc brake mount tabs. >> It’s important to us that everything bearing the Niner logo has been thought through from top to bottom and the E.M.D. 9 is no exception. We’ve poured our heart and soul into this frame, as much as any other, and we’ve created a fun, fast, comfortable ride that still embodies what it means to be a Niner.
