Coolidge High School Band Syllabus 1 Credit, Full Year 2008-09 Jason Crews, Director of Bands [email protected] (602) 903-4748 http://www.cooldigehighband.org Course Description:

Students will have the opportunity to study the music and transcriptions of the masters along with fine marches, pop selections, and contemporary literature. This group will perform in concerts. Participation in all performances and festivals is required. May be repeated for credit. Mandatory Materials: Pencil Black 3 ring binder with sheet protectors Provided band folder Instrument Specific Materials (reeds, valve oil, slide grease, cleaning material, etc) Your Ears! Recommended Materials: Metronome Tuner Attendance Policy: Band is an activity that requires commitment and planning. We plan rehearsals to minimize the time requirement and maximize the productivity of the band. When any person is absent from a rehearsal, whether it be for legitimate reasons or not, it affects the group in many ways. Class rehearsal will follow the school attendance policies, found in the Coolidge High School Student Handbook. Extra-curricular rehearsals, concerts, trips and competitions are required and graded. Please check the band website calendar (http://coolidgehighband.org/?q=Calendar) when scheduling work, vacation or other personal occasions. If you face a conflict, please let a director know IMMEDIATELY. You will then be asked to fill out an Excused Absence Form (found on the website). Your absence will be excused or unexcused. If the absence is excused, you will still have to make up the points by completing an assignment at the director’s discretion. If the absence is unexcused, there will be no opportunity to make up the points missed. Please note that work is not an excusable absence. Excusable absences are for emergency situations. Sectionals will be scheduled by the director on an as-need basis. These rehearsals will be given with at least two weeks notice and will be required as part of your participation grade. If you are going to be absent from a sectional, notification to the band director is required for excusal.

Tardiness will not be tolerated. We need to start on time to ensure that we properly prepare ourselves to get the most out of rehearsal. Work and participation points missed in the first minutes of class will not be available to make up. Being tardy to a concert or extra-curricular event will result in a lowered grade for that event.
