Raising the Visibility of Local Preservation Challenges

Seven to Save August, 2008 Dear Friend of Preservation: In 2009, the Preservation League is pleased to utilize our endangered properties program, Seven to Save, to support and enhance the year-long commemoration of the voyages of Henry Hudson, Robert Fulton and Samuel de Champlain. New York State is especially rich in maritime resources and waterfront communities. The region from the Canadian border to New York Harbor is celebrated for its beauty, and boasts a rich tradition of settlement by Native Americans followed by French, Dutch, English and others. All have made important contributions reflected in the area’s buildings and landscapes. In 2009 the Preservation League is seeking nominations of endangered places that reflect the Quadricentennial themes of exploration, settlement and commerce, and the use and development of the waterways of the Hudson and Champlain Valleys. These can include but need not be limited to: commercial and industrial buildings, homes and farmsteads, underwater archeological sites, vessels, lighthouses, bridges and transportation corridors. We depend on local and regional preservation agencies, organizations and individuals like you to let us know about endangered properties around the state. The Preservation League will provide targeted support for these seven threatened historic resources throughout 2009, and will work with local groups to develop solutions for protecting them. We are committed to helping the Seven to Save designees through statewide publicity, and by giving them priority for League technical services, legal assistance and grant programs. We are delighted to report that through the community involvement and preservation strategies we have created together with local advocates, many significant properties have been saved. Enclosed is a summary of the program, which outlines criteria and program priorities. The nomination form is also attached. If you know of a special property in need of attention, please send us a nomination, postmarked no later than September 26, 2008. We’ll look forward to working with you to ensure that these places can once again become useful, beautiful points of pride in your community and in New York State!
