Denver Botanic Gardens Certificate Program for Botanical Art & Illustration Pencil/Graphite II #08W BI300-1 Instructor: Libby Kyer Course Materials: Journal – discussed in class, please don’t pre-purchase Sharpener – electric (Panasonic portable recommended) and hand-held with replaceable metal blade X-Acto holder with #11 blade Kneaded eraser White plastic eraser, in Clic holder or other adjustable holder White plastic eraser, block Eraser shield with curved openings (available in drafting supplies) Graphite pencils – 2H, HB, 2B and 6B (Berol Turquoise or Staedtler-Mars Lumograph are fine) Ebony pencil (Sanford Design Ebony in Jet Black is good) Charcoal pencil, HB or medium hardness Water-soluble graphite pencil (Sketch and Wash made by General is good) One watercolor brush – size 4 (not your best brush) Tracing paper – 9x12”, pad is cheapest Feather - large flight feather to use as desk brush (can be purchased at Michaels) Small ruler Magnifying glass #2 stump Sketch Paper/Pad at least 9x 12” – newsprint is good. 140 lb. Hot Pressed Artistico Extra White, four sheets 9x12” or larger if desired Water container Mounting board – 11 x 14” - masonite, heavy foam core, acrylic or the mounting block from watercolor paper blocks. Scotch removable tape Small square (8” or so) of white felt (available at Hobby Lobby or Michaels) Note: A $5 materials fee will be collected by the instructor at the first class, to help defray costs of specimens and special materials.
