044

44. Ad-Dukhân : Smoke In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

‫ﺣﻢ‬ Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'an and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 44:1

ِ‫وَاﻟْﻜِﺘَﺎبِ اﻟْﻤُﺒِﯿﻦ‬ By the manifest Book (this Qur'an) that makes things clear, 44:2

َ‫إِﻧﱠﺎ أَﻧﺰَﻟْﻨَﺎهُ ﻓِﻲ ﻟَﯿْﻠَﺔٍ ﻣﱡﺒَﺎرَﻛَﺔٍ إِﻧﱠﺎ ﻛُﻨﱠﺎ ﻣُﻨﺬِرِﯾﻦ‬ We sent it (this Qur'an) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan,, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 44:3

ٍ‫ﻓِﯿﮭَﺎ ﯾُﻔْﺮَقُ ﻛُﻞﱡ أَﻣْﺮٍ ﺣَﻜِﯿﻢ‬ Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments . 44:4

َ‫أَﻣْﺮًا ﻣﱢﻦْ ﻋِﻨﺪِﻧَﺎ إِﻧﱠﺎ ﻛُﻨﱠﺎ ﻣُﺮْﺳِﻠِﯿﻦ‬ Amran (i.e. a Command or this Qur'an or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 44:5

ُ‫رَﺣْﻤَﺔً ﻣﱢﻦ رﱠﺑﱢﻚَ إِﻧﱠﮫُ ھُ َﻮ اﻟﺴﱠﻤِﯿﻊُ اﻟْﻌَﻠِﯿﻢ‬ (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All -Hearer, the All-Knower. 44:6

َ‫رَبﱢ اﻟﺴﱠﻤَﺎوَاتِ وَاﻟْﺄَرْضِ وَﻣَﺎ ﺑَﯿْﻨَﮭُﻤَﺎ إِن ﻛُﻨﺘُﻢ ﻣﱡﻮﻗِﻨِﯿﻦ‬ The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 44:7

َ‫ﻟَﺎ إِﻟَﮫَ إِﻟﱠﺎ ھُﻮَ ﯾُﺤْﯿِﻲ وَﯾُﻤِﯿﺖُ رَﺑﱡﻜُﻢْ وَرَبﱡ آﺑَﺎﺋِﻜُﻢُ اﻟْﺄَوﱠﻟِﯿﻦ‬ La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore -fathers. 44:8

َ‫ﺑَﻞْ ھُﻢْ ﻓِﻲ ﺷَﻚﱟ ﯾَﻠْﻌَﺒُﻮن‬ Nay! They play in doubt. 44:9

ٍ‫ﻓَﺎرْﺗَﻘِﺐْ ﯾَﻮْمَ ﺗَﺄْﺗِﻲ اﻟﺴﱠﻤَﺎء ﺑِﺪُﺧَﺎنٍ ﻣﱡﺒِﯿﻦ‬ Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 44:10

ٌ‫ﯾَﻐْﺸَﻰ اﻟﻨﱠﺎسَ ھَﺬَا ﻋَﺬَابٌ أَﻟِﯿﻢ‬ Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 44:11

َ‫رَﺑﱠﻨَﺎ اﻛْﺸِﻒْ ﻋَﻨﱠﺎ اﻟْﻌَﺬَابَ إِﻧﱠﺎ ﻣُﺆْﻣِﻨُﻮن‬ (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 44:12

ٌ‫أَﻧﱠﻰ َﻟﮭُﻢُ اﻟﺬﱢﻛْﺮَى وَﻗَﺪْ ﺟَﺎءھُﻢْ رَﺳُﻮلٌ ﻣﱡﺒِﯿﻦ‬ How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 44:13

ٌ‫ﺛُﻢﱠ ﺗَﻮَﻟﱠﻮْا ﻋَﻨْﮫُ وَﻗَﺎﻟُﻮا ﻣُﻌَﻠﱠﻢٌ ﻣﱠﺠْﻨُﻮن‬ Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" 44:14

َ‫إِﻧﱠﺎ ﻛَﺎﺷِﻔُﻮ اﻟْﻌَﺬَابِ ﻗَﻠِﯿﻠًﺎ إِﻧﱠﻜُﻢْ ﻋَﺎﺋِﺪُون‬ Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 44:15

َ‫ﯾَﻮْ َم ﻧَﺒْﻄِﺶُ اﻟْﺒَﻄْﺸَﺔَ اﻟْﻜُﺒْﺮَى إِﻧﱠﺎ ﻣُﻨﺘَﻘِﻤُﻮن‬ On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 44:16

ٌ‫وَﻟَﻘَﺪْ ﻓَﺘَﻨﱠﺎ ﻗَﺒْﻠَﮭُﻢْ ﻗَﻮْمَ ﻓِﺮْﻋَﻮْنَ وَﺟَﺎءھُﻢْ رَﺳُﻮلٌ ﻛَﺮِﯾﻢ‬ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 44:17

ٌ‫أَنْ أَدﱡوا إِﻟَﻲﱠ ﻋِﺒَﺎدَ اﻟﻠﱠﮫِ إِﻧﱢﻲ ﻟَﻜُﻢْ رَﺳُﻮلٌ أَﻣِﯿﻦ‬ Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 44:18

ٍ‫وَأَنْ ﻟﱠﺎ ﺗَﻌْﻠُﻮا ﻋَﻠَﻰ اﻟﻠﱠﮫِ إِﻧﱢﻲ آﺗِﯿﻜُﻢ ﺑِﺴُﻠْﻄَﺎنٍ ﻣﱡﺒِﯿﻦ‬ "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 44:19

ِ‫َوإِﻧﱢﻲ ﻋُﺬْتُ ﺑِﺮَﺑﱢﻲ وَرَﺑﱢ ُﻜﻢْ أَن ﺗَﺮْﺟُﻤُﻮن‬ "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). 44:20

ِ‫وَإِنْ ﻟﱠﻢْ ﺗُﺆْﻣِﻨُﻮا ﻟِﻲ ﻓَﺎﻋْﺘَﺰِﻟُﻮن‬ "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 44:21

َ‫ﻓَﺪَﻋَﺎ رَﺑﱠﮫُ أَنﱠ ھَﺆُﻟَﺎء ﻗَﻮْمٌ ﻣﱡﺠْﺮِﻣُﻮن‬ (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 44:22

َ‫ﻓَﺄَﺳْﺮِ ﺑِﻌِﺒَﺎدِي ﻟَﯿْﻠًﺎ إِﻧﱠﻜُﻢ ﻣﱡﺘﱠﺒَﻌُﻮن‬ (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 44:23

َ‫وَاﺗْﺮُكْ اﻟْﺒَﺤْﺮَ رَھْﻮًا إِﻧﱠﮭُﻢْ ﺟُﻨﺪٌ ﻣﱡﻐْﺮَﻗُﻮن‬ "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." 44:24

ٍ‫ﻛَﻢْ ﺗَﺮَﻛُﻮا ﻣِﻦ ﺟَﻨﱠﺎتٍ وَﻋُﯿُﻮن‬ How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 44:25

ٍ‫وَزُرُوعٍ وَﻣَﻘَﺎمٍ ﻛَﺮِﯾﻢ‬ And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, 44:26

َ‫وَﻧَﻌْﻤَﺔٍ ﻛَﺎﻧُﻮا ﻓِﯿﮭَﺎ ﻓَﺎﻛِﮭِﯿﻦ‬ And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 44:27

َ‫ﻛَﺬَﻟِﻚَ وَأَوْرَﺛْﻨَﺎھَﺎ ﻗَﻮْﻣًﺎ آﺧَﺮِﯾﻦ‬ Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 44:28

َ‫ﻓَﻤَﺎ ﺑَﻜَﺖْ ﻋَﻠَﯿْﮭِﻢُ اﻟﺴﱠﻤَﺎء وَاﻟْﺄَرْضُ وَﻣَﺎ ﻛَﺎﻧُﻮا ﻣُﻨﻈَﺮِﯾﻦ‬ And the heavens and the earth wept not for them , nor were they given a respite. 44:29

ِ‫وَﻟَﻘَﺪْ ﻧَﺠﱠﯿْﻨَﺎ ﺑَﻨِﻲ إِﺳْﺮَاﺋِﯿﻞَ ﻣِﻦَ اﻟْﻌَﺬَابِ اﻟْﻤُﮭِﯿﻦ‬ And indeed We saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment, 44:30

َ‫ﻣِﻦ ﻓِﺮْﻋَﻮْنَ إِﻧﱠﮫُ ﻛَﺎنَ ﻋَﺎﻟِﯿًﺎ ﻣﱢﻦَ اﻟْﻤُﺴْﺮِﻓِﯿﻦ‬ From Fir'aun (Pharaoh); Verily! He was arrogant and was of the Musrifun (those who transgress beyond bound in spending and other things and commit great sins). 44:31

َ‫وَﻟَﻘَﺪِ اﺧْﺘَﺮْﻧَﺎھُﻢْ ﻋَﻠَﻰ ﻋِﻠْﻢٍ ﻋَﻠَﻰ اﻟْﻌَﺎﻟَﻤِﯿﻦ‬ And We chose them (the Children of Israel) above the 'Alamin (mankind, and jinns) [during the time of Musa (Moses)] with knowledge, 44:32

ٌ‫وَآﺗَﯿْﻨَﺎھُﻢ ﻣﱢﻦَ اﻟْﺂﯾَﺎتِ ﻣَﺎ ﻓِﯿﮫِ ﺑَﻠَﺎء ﻣﱡﺒِﯿﻦ‬ And granted them signs in which there was a plain trial. 44:33

َ‫إِنﱠ ھَﺆُﻟَﺎء ﻟَﯿَﻘُﻮﻟُﻮن‬ Verily, these (Quraish) people are saying: 44:34

َ‫إِنْ ھِﻲَ إِﻟﱠﺎ ﻣَﻮْﺗَﺘُﻨَﺎ اﻟْﺄُوﻟَﻰ وَﻣَﺎ ﻧَﺤْﻦُ ﺑِﻤُﻨﺸَﺮِﯾﻦ‬ "There is nothing but our first death, and we shall not be resurrected.

44:35

َ‫ﻓَﺄْﺗُﻮا ﺑِﺂﺑَﺎﺋِﻨَﺎ إِن ﻛُﻨﺘُﻢْ ﺻَﺎدِﻗِﯿﻦ‬ "Then bring back our fore -fathers, if you speak the truth!" 44:36

َ‫أَھُﻢْ ﺧَﯿْﺮٌ أَمْ ﻗَﻮْمُ ﺗُﺒﱠﻊٍ وَاﻟﱠﺬِﯾﻦَ ﻣِﻦ ﻗَﺒْﻠِﮭِﻢْ أَھْﻠَﻜْﻨَﺎھُﻢْ إِﻧﱠﮭُﻢْ ﻛَﺎﻧُﻮا ﻣُﺠْﺮِﻣِﯿﻦ‬ Are they better or the people of Tubba' and those before them? We destroyed them because they were indeed Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.). 44:37

َ‫وَﻣَﺎ ﺧَﻠَﻘْﻨَﺎ اﻟﺴﱠﻤَﺎوَاتِ وَاﻟْﺄَرْضَ وَﻣَﺎ ﺑَﯿْﻨَﮭُﻤَﺎ ﻟَﺎﻋِﺒِﯿﻦ‬ And We created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, for mere play, 44:38

َ‫ﻣَﺎ ﺧَﻠَﻘْﻨَﺎھُﻤَﺎ إِﻟﱠﺎ ﺑِﺎﻟْﺤَﻖﱢ وَﻟَﻜِﻦﱠ أَﻛْﺜَﺮَھُﻢْ ﻟَﺎ ﯾَﻌْﻠَﻤُﻮن‬ We created them not except with truth (i.e. to examine and test those who are obedient and those who are disobedient and then reward the obedient ones and punish the disobedient ones), but most of them know not. 44:39

َ‫إِنﱠ ﯾَﻮْمَ اﻟْﻔَﺼْﻞِ ﻣِﯿﻘَﺎﺗُﮭُﻢْ أَﺟْﻤَﻌِﯿﻦ‬ Verily, the Day of Judgement (when Allah will judge between the creatures) is the time appointed for all of them, 44:40

َ‫ﯾَﻮْمَ ﻟَﺎ ﯾُﻐْﻨِﻲ ﻣَﻮْﻟًﻰ ﻋَﻦ ﻣﱠﻮْﻟًﻰ ﺷَﯿْﺌًﺎ وَﻟَﺎ ھُﻢْ ﯾُﻨﺼَﺮُون‬ The Day when Maulan (a near relative) cannot avail Maulan (a near relative) in aught, and no help can they receive, 44:41

ُ‫إِﻟﱠﺎ ﻣَﻦ رﱠﺣِﻢَ اﻟﻠﱠﮫُ إِﻧﱠﮫُ ھُﻮَ اﻟْﻌَﺰِﯾﺰُ اﻟﺮﱠﺣِﯿﻢ‬ Except him on whom Allah has Mercy. Verily, He is the All -Mighty, the Most Merciful. 44:42

ِ‫إِنﱠ ﺷَﺠَﺮَةَ اﻟﺰﱠﻗﱡﻮم‬ Verily, the tree of Zaqqum, 44:43

ِ‫ﻃَﻌَﺎمُ اﻟْﺄَﺛِﯿﻢ‬

Will be the food of the sinners, 44:44

ِ‫ﻛَﺎﻟْﻤُﮭْﻞِ ﯾَﻐْﻠِﻲ ﻓِﻲ اﻟْﺒُﻄُﻮن‬ Like boiling oil, it will boil in the bellies, 44:45

ِ‫ﻛَﻐَﻠْﻲِ اﻟْﺤَﻤِﯿﻢ‬ Like the boiling of scalding water. 44:46

ِ‫ﺧُﺬُوهُ ﻓَﺎﻋْﺘِﻠُﻮهُ إِﻟَﻰ ﺳَﻮَاء اﻟْﺠَﺤِﯿﻢ‬ (It will be said) "Seize him and drag him into the midst of blazing Fire, 44:47

ِ‫ﺛُﻢﱠ ﺻُﺒﱡﻮا ﻓَﻮْقَ رَأْﺳِﮫِ ﻣِﻦْ ﻋَﺬَابِ اﻟْﺤَﻤِﯿﻢ‬ "Then pour over his head the torment of boiling water, 44:48

ُ‫ذُقْ إِﻧﱠﻚَ أَﻧﺖَ اﻟْﻌَﺰِﯾﺰُ اﻟْﻜَﺮِﯾﻢ‬ "Taste you (this)! Verily, you were (pretending to be) the mighty, the generous! 44:49

َ‫إِنﱠ ھَﺬَا ﻣَﺎ ﻛُﻨﺘُﻢ ﺑِﮫِ ﺗَﻤْﺘَﺮُون‬ "Verily! This is that whereof you used to doubt!" 44:50

ٍ‫ﻦ ﻓِﻲ ﻣَﻘَﺎمٍ أَﻣِﯿﻦ‬ َ ‫إِنﱠ اﻟْﻤُﺘﱠﻘِﯿ‬ Verily! The Muttaqun (pious - see V.2:2), will be in place of Security (Paradise). 44:51

ٍ‫ﻓِﻲ ﺟَﻨﱠﺎتٍ وَﻋُﯿُﻮن‬ Among Gardens and Springs; 44:52

َ‫ﺳﺘَﺒْﺮَقٍ ﻣﱡﺘَﻘَﺎﺑِﻠِﯿﻦ‬ ْ ِ‫ﯾَﻠْﺒَﺴُﻮنَ ﻣِﻦ ﺳُﻨﺪُسٍ وَإ‬ Dressed in fine silk and (also) in thick silk, facing each other, 44:53

ٍ‫ﻛَﺬَﻟِﻚَ وَزَوﱠﺟْﻨَﺎھُﻢ ﺑِﺤُﻮرٍ ﻋِﯿﻦ‬ So (it will be), and We shall marry them to Houris (female fair ones) with wide, lovely eyes. 44:54

َ‫ﯾَﺪْﻋُﻮنَ ﻓِﯿﮭَﺎ ﺑِﻜُﻞﱢ ﻓَﺎﻛِﮭَﺔٍ آﻣِﻨِﯿﻦ‬ They will call therein for every kind of fruit in peace and security; 44:55

ِ‫ﻟَﺎ ﯾَﺬُوﻗُﻮنَ ﻓِﯿﮭَﺎ اﻟْﻤَﻮْتَ إِﻟﱠﺎ اﻟْﻤَﻮْﺗَﺔَ اﻟْﺄُوﻟَﻰ وَوَﻗَﺎھُﻢْ ﻋَﺬَابَ اﻟْﺠَﺤِﯿﻢ‬ They will never taste death therein except the first death (of this world), and He will save them from the torment of the blazing Fire, 44:56

ُ‫َﻓﻀْﻠًﺎ ﻣﱢﻦ رﱠﺑﱢﻚَ ذَﻟِﻚَ ھُﻮَ اﻟْﻔَﻮْزُ اﻟْﻌَﻈِﯿﻢ‬ As a Bounty from your Lord! That will be the supreme success! 44:57

َ‫ﻓَﺈِﻧﱠﻤَﺎ ﯾَﺴﱠﺮْﻧَﺎهُ ﺑِﻠِﺴَﺎﻧِﻚَ َﻟﻌَﻠﱠﮭُﻢْ ﯾَﺘَﺬَﻛﱠﺮُون‬ Certainly, We have made this (Qur'an) easy in your tongue, in order that they may remember. 44:58

َ‫ﻓَﺎرْﺗَﻘِﺐْ إِﻧﱠﮭُﻢ ﻣﱡﺮْﺗَﻘِﺒُﻮن‬ Wait then (O Muhammad SAW); Verily, they (too) are waiting. 44:59
