Nancy Johnson $2,640,000 49%

Nancy Johnson has represented northwestern Connecticut since 1982. In 2002 she narrowly defeated Sam Maloney in a two incumbent match-up caused by redistricting. This year she faces a well-funded and tough challenge from Chris Murphy. The Cook Political Report ranks this race “Leans Republican.” The District Running from the Hartford suburbs to the Massachusetts and New York borders, the 5th District takes in parts of four counties as well as the cities of Waterbury, Danbury and Meriden. In 2004, Kerry narrowly won in the district. About Chris Murphy State Sen. Chris Murphy has represented Waterbury and the surrounding area for two terms, and chaired the Senate’s Public Health Committee. He also represented the area in the state House for two terms. In the legislature he has been a leader on health care, environmental issues and stem cell research. He hopes to continue these efforts in the U.S. House. www.murphyforcongress.org About Nancy Johnson Longtime Rep. Johnson is a high-ranking member of the House GOP. As chair of the Health Subcommittee of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, Johnson helped author the controversial “Medicare Part D.” Her position on this committee also puts her at the forefront of GOP tax and spending policy. She is a supporter of the Iraq War and privatized accounts for Social Security. www.johnsonforcongress.com Fundraising and Polling Johnson is one of the best-funded incumbents in the House. She brought in $2.6 million in total receipts, more than half from PACs and party committees, including thousands from her allies in the medical, insurance, and finance industries. Murphy has brought in $1.2 million, more than 75% of which came from individuals. He has $1 million on hand. Recent polling shows a very close race. A July poll gave Johnson a 38-35 lead, while an August poll for the Murphy campaign gave Johnson a 49-44 lead.
