Republican

Jerry McNerney $152,000 46%

Richard Pombo $939,000 42%

Richard Pombo is one of the House’s most controversial members. His quest for an eighth term is running up against his toughest challenge yet, from 2004 candidate Jerry McNerney. The Cook Political Report ranks this race “Leaning Republican.” The District Just west of the San Francisco metropolitan area, the 11th covers portions of four counties and includes the cities of Lodi and Stockton. The district is upper-middle-class and primarily Republican; it’s also 20% Latino. About Jerry McNerney An entrepreneur and alternative-energy consultant, McNerney received nearly 40% of the vote as an unknown and underfunded challenger in 2004. This year he’s received more serious attention from the local base and the national party, as well as the endorsement of Pombo’s Republican primary opponent. He’s running on ethics reform, renewable energy, Social Security preservation and an exit strategy for Iraq. www.jerrymcnerney.org About Richard Pombo Pombo is best known as the chair of the Resources Committee. In this position he controls legislation related to energy, land use and the environment. The environmental movement has strongly targeted this race in light of Pombo’s negative record on wetlands, species protection, oil drilling and forestry. He is a reliably conservative vote, and has been named by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington as one of the most corrupt members of Congress. He received a serious primary challenge and won the support of only 62% of his own party in June. www.richardpombo.com Fundraising and Polling Pombo has used his powerful position to bring in nearly $2.5 million, including heavy contributions from the logging, agribusiness, power generation and development industries. He has been the recipient of over $110,000 from oil, gas and coal interests in the past two years alone. He has $939,000 on hand. McNerney has brought in $452,000, 75% from individuals, and retains $152,000. A May poll taken by an environmental organization showed a very competitive race, with McNerney actually ahead 4642.
