Why is your patient getting this medication Treatment of secondary hyperuricemia, which may occur during treatment of tumors or leukemias(breast cancer).

Mechanism of action and indications (Why med ordered) Treatment of secondary hyperuricemia, which may occur during treatment of tumors or leukemias(breast cancer). Inhibits the production of uric acid by inhibiting the action of xanthine oxidase, lowers serum uric acid levels.
Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions – Hypersensitivity, use cautiously in acute attacks of gout, renal insufficiency, dose reduction
Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically) None for this pt.
Lab value alterations caused by medicine – Lower uric acid levels. May cause hypoglycemia, monitor blood glucose, may cause increase serum alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, AST and ALT levels, BUN, serum creatine, and CCr. Decrease CBC and platelets may indicate bone marrow depression. Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Increase fluid intake, report skin rash, blood in urine or flu like symptoms, follow up exams.
Nursing Process- Assessment (Pre-administration assessment) I & O, Decreased kidney function can cause drug accumulation and toxic effects. Adequate fluid intake 2500 – 3000 ml/day. Assess for rash.
Common side effects – rash (d/c drug at first sign of rash)
