The method of indicating whether an answer is true of false, should be explained clearly. Statements should have a definite answer – either true OR false. Use short statements. Eliminate extraneous material. Keep all statements at the same length and be sure to have equal number of true and false items. Avoid using double negative statements – they are hard to decipher. Avoid the following: • Verbal clues, absolutes and complex sentences. • General statements that can be either true or false without further qualifications. • Term denoting indefinite degree. • Placing items in a systematic order. • Taking statements directly form the text. 1.
