FORMAL STYLE        

We write formal letters to people we have not met Greeting: Dear Sir/Madam/ Mr. Smith Impersonal style Complex sentence structure, formal language Each paragraph develops one specific topic Include only facts; no descriptive adjectives No short forms Closing remarks: Yours faithfully/ Yours sincerely

TYPES OF LETTERS

TRANSACTIONAL LETTERS 

Are written in response to some written information (an advertisement, a letter, an invitation, a note etc.) Include all the factual information given in the rubric Use a style that is appropriate to the target reader Start with an appropriate greeting, followed by an introduction which gives the opening remarks and the reason for writing The main body- separate paragraphs with a separate topic linked with appropriate linking words and phrases The conclusion- summarizes the points in the main body and/or makes reference to future action and includes closing remarks followed by an appropriate ending
