WOODSIDE FAMIIX.

.

1st Generation • Rev. James Woodside was born and educated in England, and took orders in the Church of England. Previous to 1718 he was preaching in a Presbyterian Church in Garvago in the Bann Valley, Ireland, to the Scotch-Irish. In the summer of 1718, Rev. James Woodside and his sons William and James, with 40 families of about 160 sailed from Derry Lough, Ireland. They landed in Falmouth then settled in Brunswick~ He and his son William built a large blockhouse at Maquoit.

~ .. ':-' '.J,. -._--"

In 1718, the proprietors of B~nswick, who were Puritans and the Scotch Presbyterian settlers, invited him to preach for six months on probation. He preached here at the Fort at the Falls. He was not puritanical enough to suit the settlers, so in 1720 he returned to England and his son James soon followed, but his son William remained and became a prominent man in the Settlement. In 1726, Rev. James Woodside sent an oil Portrait of himself, painted by Gibson, to his son. A descendent has Willed the painting to the First Parish Congregational Church in Brunswick.
