MEDIA RELEASE Friday, 16 October 2009

Winning team for Newport Flour Mill site Massi, the proponent behind a planned redevelopment of one of Hobsons Bay’s worst eyesores, the Newport Flour Mill, today released details of the team that would help bring its plans to life. Project Spokesperson, John Gibson, said the team possessed the skills, expertise and track record to create a viable development on the site, a relic of the area’s industrial past. “From meetings with neighbours, business owners and council we have gleaned what people want and don’t want, what they think would and wouldn’t work and these insights have guided us through the design process,” Mr Gibson said. “Our first priority is to clean up the site and rid it of the health and safety risks it currently poses. Then, we want to create a vibrant and attractive gateway to Newport that better reflects the area, its values, geography, energy and community. “To do this we have partnered with Contour Consultants and Jackson Clement Burrows (JCB), town planners and architects renowned for innovation and whose designs reflect each individual site and its surrounds.” Mr Gibson said JCB had a proven track record in residential developments adjacent to railway lines and understood the challenges and opportunities posed by such sites. “JCB has been involved in projects that had sound walls and noise attenuation measures embedded into the design, resulting in developments with transport nearby but without the noise that can come with living close to services,” Mr Gibson said. “Working with council and the community, we have also been able to design a traffic flow system that provides access to the site without adding pressures to existing local road users. “Massi’s integrated housing credentials are proven, having taken out the award for Victoria’s best integrated housing development in 2008 for our “B” development in Brunswick East.” “Our traffic engineers, heritage planners and landscape architects are working to ensure local needs and concerns are considered and the optimum plan submitted to council for consideration.” Mr Gibson said the completion of the planning scheme amendment process by Hobsons Bay City Council would allow Massi to submit its proposed development plans to council. Massi has been working with the community to raise awareness for the need for a new gateway to Newport. Those interested in learning more should email [email protected]
