Believe that you can do it!: Don't doubt about your personal powers. Don't degrade yourself for if you do, it will induce confusion and inferiority feelings. 2. For each practical you do, make sure you understand it before moving to another. 3. For the practical that have more than one approaches, learn it one at a time 4. Don't handle the computer when you are angry. You may damage the mouse or keyboard if they refuse to give command, etc. 5. Feel at home, feel free and avoid any distraction 6. After you have learned a particular topic or approach, try doing it on your own without looking inside the tutorial. 7. If you love playing music allow cool music to run while learning 8. ..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM DEFINITION OF WINDOWS Windows is an Operating System that enables a computer user to use mouse on small screen pictures (called icons) to control the computer. It can further be defined as a graphical interface through which the user can communicate with the computer.

TYPES OF WINDOWS Windows 95 Windows 98 Windows 2000 Windows ME Windows NT Windows XP Windows Vista Windows 7

THE DESKTOP The Desktop is that area of the screen on which windows icon and dialog boxes appear. It is shown on the next page

USING MOUSE ON WINDOWS Left-Clicking: This is done by pressing down the Left mouse button

Right-Clicking: Pressing down the Right mouse button does this.

Double-Clicking: This means clicking the left mouse twice (you have to be fast in doing this). Note the left Mouse is mostly used in clicking, so when you hear click, it means the left mouse, if then you are required to right-click, it will be mention the right mouse is usually used as a short-cut of doing something. As we proceed, you’ll learn all these.

Read on! Dragging: This feature is usually used when selecting files or folders, etc. To Drag, 1. Hold down the left mouse, 2. Then move the mouse. In other words I can simply say click and drag the mouse.

..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM ICON An icon is a pictorial image which act as shortcut to programs, folder, files etc.

TO SELECT AN ICON Simple click on the icon. Note that the color of the icon will change (it will form a background), showing that it is selected. Furthermore an icon can only accept a command when it is selected and that is by clicking the left mouse. Icons are displayed on the next page. As we proceed, I will throw more light on selection of icons.

WINDOW A Window is that rectangular area of the screen on which you view program files, system drives, etc

TO OPEN A WINDOW OF AN ICON Double-click on the icon

OR Click once to select it, and then press the Enter key on your keyboard. A window is shown in Page 9

TO SHUTDOWN THE COMPUTER

1. Click on Start button.

2. Click on Turn Of Computer

3. Click on Turn Off

After this step, you’ll see some information on the screen. Like “Windows is shutting down.” “Saving you private settings” etc. Then it will go off. Note that some computer will display the following information-“It is now safe to turn off computer” If that Happens, you press the power switch on the Motherboard. Remember to turn off the Monitor after shutting down.

..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM THE IMPORTANT ICONS ON THE DESKTOP While working with the Computer, there are some Desktop Icons that you can’t do without. Icons. Once you install Windows these Icons must appear on the Desktop. Point to any of these, and you’ll see a brief information about it.

..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM MINIMIZING A WINDOW To minimize a window, first open the window (any Icon) e.g. My Documents, Recycle Bin Click on the minimize button

on the Title bar.

OR 1 Right-Click on the window’s button on the Task Bar. The Task Bar is Shown on the next page. 2 Click on Minimize

THE ADVANTAGES OF MINIMIZING A WINDOW. It will enable you to work on more than one program at a time. For instance, you could be preparing a Document on Microsoft Word, play music on Windows Media Player and check your Email on another Window—a total of three windows at a time!

RESTORING A MINIMIZED WINDOW Remember that after minimizing a window, the window will settle at the Task Bar, so to view it or work with it again, you need to restore it. Follow the steps bellow Simply click on the button that bears its title (e.g. My Computer ) on the task bar.

OR Press the following Keys on your Keyboard: Alt + Tab (Note that + is not included in just press Alt and Tab Keys.) If you have more than one window open, then do the following: 1 Hold Down the Alt Key first 2 Press the Tab Key once (it will display the total number of windows that is open) Then continue to press the Alt key till the window you wish to restore is selected. 3 Release the both keys at a time.

The Task Bar

On this Task bar,Microsoft Word Is open. So, for me to minimize itFrom the Task bar, I Right clicked on it and click on Minimize. This withdraws it to the Task Bar as a button.

..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM RESIZING A WINDOW. Did you know that you could change the size of your window? It’s Possible. That could be done in three different ways. Such as Horizontally, Vertically and by the edges.

To resize a Window Horizontally: 1. Position your mouse pointer on either of the two vertical window borders such that it turns to a two-headed arrows pointing East- West. 2. Hold down the left mouse and drag to a required position. Click

To Resize A Window Vertically: 1. Position your mouse pointer on either of the two Horizontal window borders such that it turns to a two-headed arrow pointing North-South. 2. Hold down the left mouse and drag to a required position. Click

To Resize A Window By The Edges: 1. Position your mouse pointer on any of the four edges of the window borders such that it turns to a two-headed arrow as illustrated below 2. Click and Drag to a required size. Further illustration are shown on Page 14

MAXIMIZING A WINDOW 1. Click on the Maximize Button

MOVING A WINDOW 1. Position your mouse pointer on the title bar. 2. Click and Drag to a required position. Go to Page 14 for More Information Right click on the window’s button on the Task Bar, Then Click on Move.

OR When to do this, you’ll observe that your mouse pointer will automatically appear on the title bar, changing to four (4) Headed arrows. Click and Drag to a suitable position The Title Bar is shown on Page 10

ACTIVATING A WINDOW Before you’ll be able to activate a window, there must be at least two or more windows open. Otherwise the fist window you open remains the active window.

To Do This: 1. Open at Least two or more windows. 2. Go to the Task Bar and click on the button of the window you want to activate. For instance three of my windows are open. They are Corel Draw, My Documents and Recycle Bin. Now, I want to activate My Documents (from the Task Bar) To do so, I simply click on the button named My Computer on the Task Bar.

OR If you can see any portion of that particular window click inside it. Note: The active window is the same as the current window. i.e. the one you are currently working on. Also the color of the active window’s Title Bar is thicker than other windows’ title bars, which are behind it, as well as the color of its button on the task bar.

CLOSING A WINDOW Click on the Close Button

..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM FOLDER This is a storage location on a drive - a container for programs and files in graphical user interfaces. It is symbolized on the screen by a graphical image. It is Usually Yellow In Color. You an create a folder on the Desktop, Hard Disk, My Documents(Which is also a folder)

CREATING A FOLDER ON THE DESKTOP 1. Right- Click on any free portion of the desktop 2. Point to new 3. Click on Folder 4. Type the name you which to give the Folder e.g. NASTICAH 5. Click outside or Press Enter as shown bellow

When to Right-Click and point to new, You’ll observe that there are other small pictures you can click on apart from Folder which you clicked. Isn't it?. Relax, We are going to deal with them one after the other! Did you have some programs installed in your computer? Did you know that you can open such Programs from the Desktop instead of clicking on Start Menu, etc? Assuming you have Microsoft Word installed on your Computer And you want open it from the Desktop. You can achieve this by following the simple steps below 1. Right-Click on any free potion of the Desktop. 2. Point to New. 3. Click on Microsoft Word (this will create a new Microsoft Word Document on the desktop in the form of an icon as shown below

Then simply Doble-Click on it or click once to select it, then press Enter your Keyboard to open the new Microsoft Word Document.

You can also use this steps to add other programs on the Desktop. Remember we are still talking about Folder, so lets move on!

CREATING FOLDERS IN A DISK You are going to learn how to create folders in a disk. E.g. Hard Disk(or Local Disk) to achieve this, follow the steps below 1. Open My Computer icon

Hope you’re there? Now there are about three ways we can create a folder here. So let me take them one after the other.

FIRST APPROACH

(from the Menu Bar)

1. Click on File menu 2. Point to new Type the name of the folder Press Enter or click outside to confirm it. Note that when you click on New, the folder name will be New Folder.

SECOND APPROACH

(By Right-Clicking)

1. Right-Click on any free portion inside the window 2. Point to new 3. Click on Folder 4. Type the Folder Name 5. Click outside or Press Enter

THIRD APPROACH

(From The Task Pane)

1. Click on Make a New Folder On the window’s Task Pane 2. Type the folder Name 3. Click outside or Press Enter If you have forgotten your Task Pane Please Refer back to Page 10

After Creating a Folder, You may like to Change the name to desired one. How do you do it? That’s the next thing you are going to learn.

..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM Did you know that you can create a folder inside a folder? Are you surprised to hear that? Its possible!!!. When you open My Documents You’ll see other folders inside it. In that same way, you can equally create a folder inside it. The act of creating folder inside a folder is not for fun but with reasons. It will enable you to arrange your files. For instance you may like to save (or store) all Microsoft Word Documents in one folder, save all Corel Draw Graphics in another folder of its own, etc. To achieve this, open the Folder and follow any of the steps listed on Pages 18-21

COPYING & CUTTING FILES FROM ONE FOLDER TO ANOTHER On this topic you are going to learn how to copy and cut files from one folder to another but before then let us define the terms that are involved with this topic.

FILE A File is a collection of data that a user can retrieve, save, edit or send to an output device e.g. Printer

SOURCE (OR EXISTING) FOLDER: This is the folder that contains the files that you want to copy or cut.

TARGET (OR DESTINATION) FOLDER: This is the folder where you will paste the file you cut or copied.

SOURCE (OR EXISTING) DRIVE: This drive contains your source folder

TARGET (OR DESTINATION) DRIVE: It contains your target folder Note a source drive (e.g. Hard Disk Or USB)can contain both source Folder and target folder. In other words a drive could be either a source Drive or a target drive

To copy files etc..

(from the Menu Bar)

1. Open the source folder, e.g My Documents 2. Select the file(it could also be an application or even a folder) 3. Click on File menu 4. Click on copy 5. Open the target folder (which is the new folder you have already created) (Note that each folder (or say icon) you open have its menu. 6. Click on File Menu again (in this your target folder) 7. Click on paste

..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM THE ZIPPED FOLDER This is a special folder. It has features that others did not have. With this folder (zip folder) you can protect all the files inside it such that only you will have access to it.

TO CREATE A ZIPPED FOLDER 1. Right-Click on any free portion inside the window 2. Point to new 3. Click on Compressed (Zipped) Folder 4. Type the Folder Name 5. Click outside or Press Enter

PROTECTING FILES IN A ZIPPED FOLDER This is done by adding password to the files inside the zipped folder. A password is a series of characters that must be provided before an access is authorized. It could be made up of letters, numbers, and symbols, It is case sensitive. 1. Open the Zipped Folder Which already contain files. 2. Click on File Menu 3. Click on Add a Password (as shown in the next Page) 4. Enter the Password 5. Confirm the Password 6. Click on OK Note that after the password has been successfully added, you must enter the Password before you access or open any file in the zipped folder. Even when you want to extract the files.

6 4 5 The two passwords you entered here MUST BE THE SAME and it is the one that will be requested for you to enter when you want to access the fills inside or extract it

..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM EXTRACTING FILES IN A ZIPPED FOLDER 1. Right-click on the zipped folder 2. Click on Extract All 3. Click on Next(if you passworded it, click on password button and type the Password) 4. Click on next (then wait will the files are been extracted. This may take a little time, depending on the size of the files/folders inside it) 5. Click on finish

RESTORING DELETED FILES T o restore deleted items means to send(restore) that i tem back to it’s former location, where it is been deleted from. When you delete a file, folder etc. It is not permanently deleted. It will be stored on the special container call Recycle Bin. This is because you may need it in future. How great does this sound! The Items could be deleted files, folders, drives, software etc. 1. Double-Click on the Recycle Bin icon (on the desktop) 2. Right-click on the item 3. Click on Restore

TO RESTORE ALL DELETED FILES 1. Open the Recycle Bin 2. Click on Restore All Items OR 1. Open the Recycle Bin 2. Press Ctrl + A to select all items 3. Click on file menu 4. Click on Restore

TO EMPTY THE RECYCLE BIN Although the Recycle Bin holds our recycle bin, it still occupy 10% or more of our hard disk space. You can empty it to ensure more disk space. 1. Open the Recycle Bin 2. Click on file menu 3. Click on Empty Recycle bin Warning! When you empty the recycle bin you will loose all the “items” forever!!!

..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM DELETING A FOLDER 1. Select the folder 2. Press delete key on your keyboard(a dialog box will appear) 3. Click on yes. You cal also delete from the Menu bar, by Right-Clicking and from the Task Pane Or If you are on the Desktop, point on the folder, then press down the left mouse and move (i.e. dragging) it to the recycle bin

CHANGING DESKTOP BACKGROUND 1. Click on Start Menu. 2. Click on Control Panel 3. Double-Click on the Display icon Note that there are two types of views (Category View and Classic View)when you open the Control Panel. One of these view must be your current view. They are shown in Pages 27 and 28. If you are on Classic view, follow step 3 above. What if you are on category view? Do the following * Click on Appearance and Themes Then click on the Display icon under 4. Click on Desktop Tab 5. Select a desired background from the background box. 6. Click on ok. This is practically illustrated on page 29 To switch to category view, click on Switch to Category view

..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM SETTING SCREEN SAVER 1. Click on Start Menu 2. Click on Control Panel 3. Open the Display Icon(for classic view) 4. Click on Screen Saver tab(immediately after Desktop tab) 5. Open the screen saver box and select one(when you select one you will see it on the preview) 6. Click on settings button to change the settings of that screen saver. Click on OK When done with the settings 7. Click on preview button to preview it. 8. Select the time limit be for the screen saver will appear 9. Click on Ok when done Note: when you preview a screen saver or when the screen saver appears, do not touch the mouse or press any key. This will stop the Screen saver from showing. On the contrary, you can move your mouse or press a key if you want to stop the screen saver. This is shown on page 31 Did you have pictures in My Pictures Folder? If yes, Did you know that you can use it as your Screen Saver? TO USE PICTURES AS SCREEN SAVER 1. Copy or save pictures in My Pictures Folder (open My documents and you’ll see it) 2. Repeat steps 1-5 above 3.clck on My Pictures Slide Show 4. Click on Settings button to enhance the look of the pictures. Page 32 shows how your settings should be for better result. You can change it if you like. 5. Click on Ok when done with the settings 6. Click on OK to confirm it and as well close the dialog box

5. Click on Effects button to set the visual effects of menus, icons and fonts. 6. Click on Ok. You’ll see “Please Wait” on the screen. Wait for some seconds. Below is how your title bar will look like.

Didi you now that you have a feature that will help to introduce or even tell you the function of the buttons or the thing you don't know? Let’s Go! In that Dialog box that is open right now, you’ll see a Question mark button at the top right. Click on it, then click on Effects button, it will give you a hint of what you can do with it or the things you can do when you click on that button

It is always advisable to use a higher screen resolution and colour quality as this will enhance the picture quality on your screen. Some programs requires that you increase you screen resolution to minimum of 1024x768 pixels. *********************************************************************************************** Did you know that there is a simplest way of changing the Desktop Background, Themes, Screen Saver and Even Monitor resolution? 1. Simply right-click on the Desktop, Click on Properties and you’ll get there!

..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM ARRANGING ICONS IN FOLDERS/DRIVES 1. Open the folder/drive 2. Right-Click on any free portion of the window 3. Point to Arrange Icons By 4. Click either of the following- Name, Size, Type, Modified as shown in the next Page. You can also do the same from the View Menu

Following the above steps, you can equally arrange the Icons on the desktop and the icons on your drive.

VIEWING OF ICONS IN FOLDERS AND DRIVES You can view the files and folders(which are also Icons) in your computer in the follow ways A) thumbnails b) icons c)list d)details. This could be achieved in three different ways such as from the menu bar, Standard tool bar and by right-clicking

From the menu bar 1. Click on View Menu Click on either Thumbnails, Icons, List Details

From the Standard Tool Bar 1. Click on the views icon

on the standard tools bar and select either of the

option, observing different effects of the views. For instance if you select Thumbnails, the icons on your window will appear very large. Furthermore if you have pictures in that folder, it will display the selected one in a preview.

CHECKING THE PROPERTIES OF A DISK 1. Open My Computer from the Desktop 2. Select the drive. E.g. Local Disk (C:), 3 ½ Floppy (A:), Removable Disk (E:) 3. Click on file menu 4. Click on Properties Close the window when done. You can use this approach to check the properties of a file, folder etc. This will give you the details about the drive, file or folder, fo instance, For drives: it will display the file system, used space, free space and the capacity(i.e. The total size) For files: it will display the type of file it is, the location, the size, the size on disk, the date it was created, the date it was modified ,the date it was accessed last etc. For Folders: it will display the type of folder it is, the location, the size, the size on disk, the total number of files and folders it contains etc.

CHECKING THE SYSTEM PROPERTIES 1. Right-Click on My Computer 2. Click on System Properties 3. Click on OK when done

In that open window, everything you need to know about windows like i told you earlier is there. NOW LETS PROCEED. I guess you see the beautiful icons am seeing on my own?. Each of these icons have links that you can click to get help as wells more information concerning that link. but hey, I wont teach you how to do them one after the other because its too many! But will stand by you, providing you the secretes and guidelines to do it independently. I’ve laid the foundation for you. TO LEARN THE ABC OF USING WINDOWS. 1. At your left hand side in that help and support window, you’ll see the icon shown below with its options.

Then move inside the window and click on Common tasks: Display settings 6. Click on Choose a different desktop theme 7. Click on Step be Step Procedure. So after taking step 7, click on Desktop and wait, you’ll see the definition- The on-screen work area on which windows, icons, menus and dialog boxes appear. Click on help and support as usual 3. Type glossary and press enter 4. Click on glossary(it may appear more than once so click on one. If you'll like to know the meaning of Device for instance, click on D on the alphabets lettered A-Z 5. Scroll down, and you’ll see device and its definition. This is how to get definitions of terms. ..........WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM PROTECTING YOUR COMPUTER Windows gives you the opportunity to protect your computer using password. When this is done, it is only you that will have access to the protected computer, if then you happens to forget the password, you’ll also loose access to it.

To protect your computer 1. Click on Start menu 2. Click on Control Panel 3. Open the User account icon 4. Click on user (Computer Administrator). (I.e down, towards left) Note that the name you’ll find there depends on the name that was used the first time Windows was installed in your PC. When you click on Start menu, you’ll see yours. Mine is User as shown below 5. Click on Create a password 6. Fill in the required information 7. Click on create password. You have successfully protected your computer. To test it, restart you computer. It will request for a pass word before you must pen it. Always use a password that you can remember.
