Why does it get cold in winter? Ms. Gerike and Mrs. Meltzer

What important role does the sun have? The sun is where we get all of our light and warmth. The sun is higher in the sky in summer, making the sunlight beat directly down on you. This makes the temperature hotter.

In winter, the sun is lower in the sky, making the sunlight shine sideways and not directly down. This makes the temperature colder.

Why do tropical places never get cold? In tropical places, the sun goes high overhead each day, year round.

The Earth’s tilt allows tropical places, places close to the middle of the Earth, warm all year. Places farther away from the middle have bigger differences in temperature.

Why do places like California not get as cold as places like New Jersey? This again has something to do with the Earth’s tilt and how the sun hits the Earth at different times of the year. The Earth spins, or rotates, allowing for different places on Earth to experience different temperatures during summer and winter.
