James Jacobs Info 4493 Bob Houghton Week 1 This week I was tasked with setting up a server for a new ILS (integrated library system). This is essentially a database for all of the items that are cataloged in a library. I have started by looking at the requirements for the software. They are located at https://koha-community.org/download-koha/ After noticing that this software requires Debian, I have taken to learning more about Linux operating systems. There are multiple families of these systems, Debian being one of the core ones, the most popular and most modified one. As I already had a copy of Linux mint around ( a derivative of Debian) I decided to just install that one. It occurs to me only now that installation of software, including operating systems is a skill, one that I nearly take for granted. When I arrived for a shift on Friday, the three new computers that need to be set up for patron use had arrived. There was also a ‘fire’ to put out. Our network shared drive was not connecting to any computer it was shared to, and our login software was having spotty connections across a few machines. Both were on the same machine so I began to investigate. I typed the error into google and had found out that just a few days ago, an update was sent out to windows 7 for security that happened to break shared drives. I proceeded to uninstall the update and all machines could then access the share drive. This is everything I have done this week. I still have another shift Saturday, but this needs to be turned in.
