History 1200’s Macassan and Bugis traders from Indonesia. 1800’s The early fleets of settlers also used Muslims, from coastal Africa and the islands and territories under the British Empire, for labour and as navigators. 1860’s Afghan cameleers. Oldest mosque in Australia (built 1861) is situated near Marree in South Australia and the Great Mosque of Adelaide was built (1890) by the descendants of the cameleers. 1870s Muslim Malay divers were recruited through an agreement with the Dutch to work on Western Australian and Northern Territory pearling grounds. 11/11/2009

History - cont 1920-30’s Albanian Muslims settle in Victoria Albanian Muslims built the first mosque in Victoria in the town of Shepparton in 1960 and the first mosque in Melbourne in the year 1963. 1967-1971 approx 10,000 Turks settle in Australia under Australia-Turkey agreement. 1975 large scale Lebanese Muslim immigration. Lebanese are the most high profile Arab group. 1991 Somali and Horn of Africa migration. 2000+ Growing community of indigenous Muslims. Changing priorities between each generation. 11/11/2009

Stats - cont Compared with the non-Muslim Australians, Muslim Australians were significantly younger. Almost 40 per cent were younger than 20 compared with 27 per cent of non-Muslims. Around 37 per cent of Muslims and 27 per cent of nonMuslim Australians were between 20 and 39 years of age, Only 6 per cent of Muslims were older than 60 compared with 19 per cent of Non-Muslim Australians. Their age structure suggests that as a human resource Australian Muslims are concentrated in the more economically productive years of the lifecycle. 11/11/2009
