UNDERSTANDING NATURE

What is Nature….?  

 

Nature is something that surrounds us. The classification of nature is done on the basis of it’s contents i.e. Flora and Fauna. These have a direct impact on it. Nature is a combination of the water resources , the forest resources and the wildlife resources that are necessary for our sustainability.

The ecological balance

All the components of nature help to maintain ecological balance. Today in the midst of development and progress eco values have been lost in the headlong exploitation of nature. Time has come for us to return to our roots and rediscover traditional ways of life lived in harmony with nature. And if we have a closer look at all these aspects an respect them we have a lot to learn from this diverse nature that we have.

Management techniques learnt from nature  The

management techniques learnt from the session on nature was :  The amoeba strategy: the way amoeba multiplies exponentially , in the same fashion knowledge multiplies by sharing it .  The leopard strategy: the way the leopard makes correct usage of it’s energy while hunting it’s prey , in the very same way we should make proper usage of our resources.

The Himalayas – the thirst quenchers

Water and the task of conserving it 



The Himalayas and all the other snow clad mountains of the world are the sources of water, that quench the never dying thirst of humans. The world is running short of potable water. This makes the task of water conservation vital, as the existence of the future generations will depend on our endeavor to save water.

Water Management in indusrial establishment 





Hotels are the largest consumers of water for various applications According to a survey an average hotel room consumes 1000-3000 liters of water per room on an average The usage also depends a lot on the number of restaurant , the location of the hotel, the type of air conditioning and the type of water conservation methods that have been adopted by the hotel.

Types of water consumption There are two types of water consumption in the hotels.  These are : Primary usage and secondary usage  Primary usage is that type of water usage in which the applications that require the usage of water that is potable and has no harms for the human beings with regards to its consumption by human beings  Examples are : kitchen applications , bathing and laundry servicing. 

Water consumption in Industrial establishment(contd) Secondary usage comprises of the usage of water that has been used and recycled for usage again  Examples : horticulture , landscaping , floor wash , cooling towers , toilet flush ,road wash, car wash etc.  Secondary usage water is generated from the primary usages that can be treated to meet the required standards. 

The Negatives: In many places despite the positioning of the tags and the posters to save water the employees don’t follow the instructions . Water wastage is at it’s peak during cleaning and fumigation specially in the butchery and garde manger area. Excessive quantity of water is used for cleaning of vegetables . Wrong cooking methods are also causing wastage

Suggestions and remedies



Usage of instruments and gadgets that measure the amount of water before supplying it. Avoid the usage of running water in kitchens for washing and cleaning Co ordination between engineering and kitchens in maintaining the condition of the taps for providing water Recycling of the kitchen water can be done and this can be used again in the various other departments for different purposes.

Hotels are one of the largest generators of garbage where the waste that is generated per day accumulates from thousands to tonnes of garbage Waste can be classified into two types: Dry garbage and wet garbage The kitchen department contributes to about 50% of the garbage from a hotel.

Waste management becomes a problem because of the sheer amount of garbage that is disposed at a time. If this waste is handled carefully then it can be of great use also but if it is treated and turned into usable state. Example : the waste can be used for making fertilizers and the wet waste can be used in making bio gas.

Handling various types of wastes 







Plastic and glass wastes: these can be reused in the departments like housekeeping in order to store the cleaning agents Paper can be recycled to make the paper for decorative purposes. Breakages of glass can be used for the fencing purposes. Waste food can be used by the horticulture department to make manure.
