Calixtro Santos Mrs. Wells English III -5 9/14/09 Washington Irving report Who would have taught that one of the best professional basketball teams also known as the New York Knicks got there name from a writer. The writer was no one less than Washington Irving America first writer to develop a style of his own. The name that is use by the team was Washington Irving’s character Mr. Knickerbockers (Knicks) who told the local history and political in New York newspapers eventually his character’s name came to mean “a person who is from New York”. Washington Irving is the son of Scottish-English immigrants William and Sarah. Irving is the youngest of all the 11 but three died at infancy. He was not too well educated. Washington Irving enjoys writing stories so much that he cut classes in school to go to theaters. He had other interest like law, art, but soon gave them up to devote himself purely to writing. Washington Irving was name after the Hero of the American Revolution which he later met when he was six years of age. Since there was an outbreak of the yellow fever in Manhattan, the family sent Irving to safer climates, and eventually to Europe. Washington Irving like traveling and much of his life was spent in Europe. When he became a pure writer, his brothers supported him financially. He had a successful career yet he also had the tragedy of his future wife to be died when she was seventeen. One of the major achievements of Washington Irving would be o course being the first literary voice of America also being the first writer in America to make a living purely on writing. Some of Irving’s works would include Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle which are included in The Sketch Book. The Sketch Book is what carry Washington Irving to international fame which he love especially the praise. Washington Irving is the first American literary. He is famous mainly because he wrote good stories, and his readers love it. He was born In New York City in 1783-1859 ,and his stories and legacy still lives on today.
