Vedic Mathematics -Subtraction 10 10 is the most important number for you. Simply speaking when we 93 it is simply 9 x 10 + 3x 1= 90 + 3 = 93 What I am writing below are not any rules and are just few basic concepts. When we are in tiny tots (for me it was like more than 23 years ago) we were taught to add and subtract. 69-34 = meant we would first subtract 4 from 9 and than 3 from 6. No problem as in this case both numbers are smaller the numbers they are being subtracted from. 62-37 = we were told in traditional method that we have to make 2 bigger than seven by taking from 1 from 6 and thus making 2 as 12 than 12-7 = 5 and 6 was reduced to 5 so 5-3 = 2, therefore answer was 25. Fair enough. Lets try Vedic Mathematics approach.. 6/2 3/7 ------5 2

2-7 = -5, that means it is 5 short of 10 since there was negative result from subtraction operation in units place, it means that we have to reduce 6 by 1 and hence 5-3

25 71-58 7/1 5/8 -----5 1 15

1-8= -7, that means it is 3 short of 10 since there was negative result from subtraction operation in units place, it means that we have to reduce 7 by 1 and hence 6-5

In above mentioned example when we do 71-58 instead of writing digit from right to left we write from left to right i.e. 7-5 = 2, 1 -8 = -7, i.e. 3 short than 10 therefore = 3, since it is short than 10 , we reduce result of 7-5 by 1 i.e. 2-1 = 1.

From this example onwards I won’t write whole detail. 92 - 43 9/2 4/3 --------5+ -1 ( 9 less than 10) 9 5-1 49 87- 39 8/7 3/9 ------5+ 8( 2 less than 10) 5-1 48

67-18 6/7 1/8 ------5+ 9 ( 1 less than 10)

5-1 49

Lets see now adding 3 digit number with 2 digit number. 453 - 87 45 / 3 8/7 -------37 + 6 ( 4 less than 10) 37-1 366 To subtract 8 from 45 is a lot easier than trying add trying subtract 87 from 453

686 - 59 68 / 6 5/9 ------63 + 7 ( 3 less than 10) 63 -1/ 7 627

948 - 99 94 / 8 9/9 ------83 + 9 ( 1 less than 10) 83-1 / 9 829

948 +347 9/4/8 3/4/7 ------6+ 0 +9 6 /0-9/9 6-1/1/9 ( 0-9 means -9, that 1 less than 10) 519 Few more examples. 587 + 139 5/ 8 / 7 1 /3 / 9 -------4+ 5 8 ( 7-9 = -2, means 2 less than 10) 4 /5-1/8 448 75 / 9 6/4 -------81 + 13 823

378 + 56 37/8 5/6 ----42+ 14 434

Lets try 4 digit number with 3 digit number 4547 - 679 4/5/4/ 7 6/7/ 9 ----------------4 / -1 9 / -1 7/ -1 8 3/8/6/8 3868 9265 -3689 9 / 2 / 6 /5 3 / 6 / 8 /9 -------------6 / -1 6 / -1 8/-1 6 5576

Taking the example above when u see 9 / 2 / 6 /5 3 / 6 / 8 /9 Without even thinking put -1 in digit separator when u see a small number on top in the above example right way to attempt would be, subtract 9-3 , write 6,but when u see 2 above 6 write -1 than do 2-6 = -4,hence 6 short of 10. So write 6 to right of -1 ( as I have written) . Now when you see 6 above 8, write -1 and than 6-8=-2 i.e 2 less than 10, so 8, lastly 5 over 9,-1 than proceed to calculate 5-9= -4 i.e 4 less than 10, so6. Now we reduce we reduce 6 by 1( as 6 has -1 next to it ) again 6 reduce by 1 ( as 6 has -1 next to it ) than 8 by 1 ( as 8 has -1 next to it ) Another example 8234 –3759 8/2/3/4 3/7/5/9 ------------5/ -1 5/ -1 8 / -1 5 4/ 4/ 7/5 4475

Different Levels LEVEL 1 8234 –3759 8/2/3/4 3/7/5/9 ------------5/ -1 5/ -1 8 / -1 5 4/ 4/ 7/5

LEVEL 2 8234 –3759 82 / 34 37 / 59 ------------5-1 5/ -1 8-1 5 4475 4547 - 679 45/ 47 6/ 79 ----------------39 / -1 7 -1 8 38/ 6 8 3868 9265 -3689

92 / 65 36 / 89 -------------6-1 6 / -1 8 -1 6 55/76 5576 LEVEL 3 686 - 498 = 6/8/6 - 4/9/8 = 2 / -1 9 / -1 8 188 LEVEL 4 686 - 498 = 68/6 - 49/8 = 2 -19 / -1 8 1 8/ 8 188

How to do it faster 1) Start with subtraction of two digit numbers to two digit number using level 1 method. 2) Do not try to be whiz kid and use pencil and paper for initial practice. 3) Make a sheet with at least 20-30 sums. 4) Start with Level 1 till than Level 4 do not jump directly to level 4 5) As they never mix your drinks so do not mix both methods i.e. old and new , you may ask whey would we do that, reason is that I am telling you from a students point of you ie. We tend to use a way which we feel comfortable case scenario can be 652 -358 Most of students tend to do solve like this 65/2- 35/8 = instead of subtracting 6 from 3 and 5 from 5 we directly reduce 65 from 35 i.e 30 and than proceed 2- 8, Nothing wrong, just that when you are tying to adopt a new technique and you start using older technique within new technique than you are almost driving in middle of the path i.e. neither totally to with old technique neither with new technique
