DESIGN :: ILLUSTRATION UNIT

This aim of this unit is to get an introduction to working with vector graphics if you haven’t before, or if you have some experience with vectors, to hone those skills. In addition, and much more importantly, it aims to improve your visual literacy through engagement with the concepts of realism, iconic abstraction, visual distillation and caricature.

You will be assessed on 4 projects (SEE THE FULL BRIEFS FOR DETAILS):

01. Pictograms exercise. 20% Due Week 3 Fri 13 March.

02. Project1. Information architecture graphic. 30% Due Week 7 Fri 10 April.

03. Project 2. Editorial illustration. 30% Due Week 10 Fri 8th May.

Week 1. Intro to theoretical overview of the unit: Why draw? Difference between vector and raster images. Intro to drawing tools. Rectangles, Elipses, Stars. Intro to Pictograms exercise.

Week 2. Drawing tools continued. The bezier curve. The tilde button combined with drawing tools. Lines, line weights and mitres. Pathfinder tool: to expand or not to expand. Clipping masks. Align tool. Blends. Line and fills. In-class work on pictograms.

Week 3. In-class work on pictograms. Hand-in Pictograms. Week 4. Intro to information design. Colours palettes. Selecting objects by colour, selecting by stroke. Colour libraries.

Week 5. In-class work on Information design. Hand-in info design. Layers. Type and typography. Converting to paths. Type around a path.

Week 6. In-class work on Information design. Hand-in info design. Week 7. In-class work on Information design. Hand-in info design. Week 8. Intro to editorial illustration. Brushes. Gradients. Historical colour palettes. Advanced colour.

Week 9. In-class work on editorial illustration. Effects. Illustrator and Photoshop. Smart objects.

Week 10. In-class work on editorial illustration. Hand-in editorial illustration. Week 11. Intro to free illustration. Keeping an illustration journal. Week 12. In-class work on free illustration. Week 13. In-class work on free illustration. Hand-in free illustration and journal.
