PURPOSE

There is a vacancy for a Band 5 Head of Publications in the Communications team based in the Swindon Office of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The Communications team deals with external communications, including corporate communications, PR and public engagement. It runs a press office, organises events, produces a range of publications and provides advice and support to the NERC community on all aspects of communication. As a senior member of the team, the Head of Publications will drive the strategic direction and style of NERC’s corporate publications and online communications, working closely with the Head of Communications and colleagues across the organisation to promote NERC’s external image and research findings. MAIN DUTIES

The Head of Publications leads a team (writing, editing, design and production) responsible for delivering high-quality online and print material to promote the organisation and the research it funds. . The role entails producing a portfolio of publications aimed at NERC’s stakeholders and the public, including the Annual Report, the Planet Earth quarterly magazine and the Planet Earth Online daily environmental research news website. This work involves finding out what new science is emerging across the NERCfunded community, sourcing ideas for stories, commissioning and writing articles and developing new communication channels. The publications team also provide a service to other parts of the organisation. This involves advising on the style and format of publications, collaborating with researchers to create the content of brochures, strategies, leaflets and posters, and helping ensure publications use plain English that can be understood by a general audience. The Head of Publications will take a hands-on role in delivering these products but will also oversee and plan the portfolio of work and take the lead in developing innovative products and exploring novel approaches using new media. Working with the Head of Communications and External Communications Manager the role-holder will also contribute to NERC’s overall communication strategy. The Head of Publications will be responsible for the leadership, line management and development of a designer/production manager, a science writer, a writer/editor and an administrator. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE Essential Skills



Excellent science writing skills plus a track record in the communication of science and the issues that surround it.



Proven track record of communicating complex material in plain language.



Proven experience of editing and editorial processes.



Ability to think creatively and develop a clear vision for how best to deliver specific objectives using different communications channels.



Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact confidently at all levels with a range of people, both within NERC and outside it.



Proven leadership skills: managing and motivating a team to deliver a range of tasks in a professional and cohesive way. Ability to plan, prioritise and manage the team’s output to meet agreed timescales.

Desirable Skills



Experience of using the new media (web, podcasts, blogging, twitter etc) to communicate science.



Speech writing experience/skills.



Experience of online marketing strategies that will increase online traffic.



Experience of producing video.



Understanding of the research councils and how they operate.



Knowledge of environmental sciences
