Site Features Legend Each site in the Utah Solar Tour Guidebook is accompanied by a description of features and equipment. To aid in your understanding, we provide the following definitions: Solar PV- Photovoltaic electricity producing solar panels Grid-Tie – Solar PV output connected to the utility grid Net Metering – Selling excess electricity back to the utility Off-Grid – Building is self powered; not connected to the utility Solar Thermal – Solar hot water heating Radiant Floor – Hot water floor heating Passive Solar – Design uses the sun to heat, light or cool the home Wind – Electricity generated by a wind turbine

Welcome to the Utah Solar Tour 2008 The Utah Solar Energy Association (UTSEA), in concert with more than 40 sponsors and 55 homes and facilities, is pleased to welcome you to the Utah Solar Tour 2008. We are proud to join states across the nation as part of the National Solar Tour sponsored by the American Solar Energy Society (ASES).

Utah’s 13th annual tour provides an opportunity for you to see solar thermal, solar photovoltaic, passive solar technologies, wind and thermal technologies. On this tour you will meet solar energy users, homeowners and business owners who are excited to share how they are utilizing the sun to help meet their electricity, hot water and heating needs. Ultimately the tour inspires people across the nation to make sustainable energy choices that help lower costs, support energy independence, protect against power outages, and reduce carbon emissions. An increasing focus of the tour is on energy-saving techniques and sustainability through building design, energy efficient appliances, and use of green materials during remodeling. Tours also provide helpful, real-world examples of costs and how to save money with federal, state, and local incentives. We invite you to join the renewable energy revolution by participating in the 2008 Utah Solar Tour.

Other – Other energy efficient or renewable energy features kW = kilowatt (1000 watts)

See you on the tour!

kWh – Kilowatt hour

Clark Planetarium (Gateway) 110 S 400 W SLC, UT Solar PV, Grid-Tie Grid interconnected PV System with blasted roof mount. Installed in June, 2008 the system is estimated to have utility savings of 10% or about $5,000/year. The panels are “floating” on the roof (no penetration in the roofing material). Unistrut framework ties all six rows (24 panels in each row) together and holds panels stable using concrete-block ballast. The angle of each section of six panels can be changed (at cross-quarter junctions) to take advantage of the average elevation of the sun (high in the summer, medium in spring and fall, low in the winter). Rocky Mountain Power provided a grant, and a tax credit was used to obtain roof space from Inland Management (Gateway) over the Megaplex Theater. 27,360 watt solar PV system ballasted roof mount. 6 Fronius IG 4500 4,500 watt 208V inverter (3-phase). 144 each 190-watt solar cell panels, 6 each Fronius DC-to-AC converters. Gardner Engineering Located at the Gateway Center near downtown Salt Lake City at 400 West and 110 South. The facility is owned by Salt Lake County. Tour will be limited to the public “Star Power” exhibit on the first floor of the Clark Planetarium which shows the power output of the solar-power system on a monitor in real time. Craig Forster, 3479 E Quad Rd., Salt Lake City, UT Solar Thermal This system was installed in February 2008. The air handler uses solar thermal energy for forced air hearting. 5 Steibel Eltron solar thermal panels, Takagi tankless heater for natural gas back-up, 2 - 80 gallon Steibel Elton water tanks, Lifebreath air handler.
