CIVIL WAR SHIPWRECK The USS Westfield, an 822-ton Union gunboat, participated in the capture of Galveston in October 1862. On Jan. 1, 1863, it ran aground and was threatened by Confederate attack. To prevent capture, the boat was blown up by its crew.
