1.0 Introduction This document describes how to install, configure and use the Massey University Virtual Private Networking service for PCs running Microsoft Windows XP Professional. The Virtual Private Network Service (VPN) is designed to allow University staff to access network services via the Internet, thereby eliminating the need to make costly long distance modem calls to the Remote Access Service (RAS). Further technical information relating to VPN is available from Microsoft’s web site at http://www.microsoft.com. This guide assumes a basic knowledge of how to operate a Windows XP PC and concentrates on the special aspects of using this service.
1.1 Services Available The following services are available to clients connecting to the VPN service: • • • • • •
Access to network drives and shares (e.g. your H drive); Access to networked printers; Access to email and MS Exchange™ servers; Admin Services (eg. MAS) Website Access (restricted to internal access) Telnet
1.2 Prerequisites for using the System To make use of the VPN Service you need the following: • To be registered for the VPN service; • To have access to a computer with an existing internet connection (See 1.3); • To be familiar with the Massey University Policy on the Use of Information Communication & Processing Systems, a copy of which can be found at http://its-intra.massey.ac.nz/policies/policyuse.htm.
1.3 Minimum Connection Requirements The existing Internet connection may consist of either a computer connected to a corporate network, or a standalone PC fitted with a modem. Due to the amount of data that will need to be transferred it is recommended that machines not connected to a network use at least a 33.6kbps modem. For optimum performance a v.90 56kbps modem or other high speed internet connection (e.g. ADSL) is recommended.
1.4 Help Please direct any general queries, or fault reports to the Information Technology Services (ITS) Help Desk on ext. 5200, or email to [email protected]. Please be aware that some of the faults you may encounter may be due to problems with your internet connection and as such must be resolved by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). The Help Desk will advise you if this is the case.

2.0 Preparing your computer for Virtual Private Networking This document assumes that you already have an existing connection to a non-Massey Internet Service Provider (ISP). This means that you will already have an account with an organisation such as Clear Net, Xtra or Ihug. If you do not have an existing connection you will first need to organize this before proceeding. This section of the guide will show you how to prepare your PC for Virtual Private Networking and how to make a connection to the Massey University Network. This document assumes that you have a Clear Net account.
2.1 Windows XP Updates It is not necessary for any of the Windows XP Service Packs or patches to be installed on your machine for you to successfully utilise this service. However we do recommend that install the latest patches to ensure the smooth operation of your computer in the longer term. To find out which patches and updates are available for your system visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. It is recommended that you apply the latest available patches and updates before installing VPN.
2.2 Configuring VPN for Windows XP 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Click on ‘Start’ and select ‘Control Panel’. On the left hand side of the Control panel click on ‘Switch to Classic View’. Double click the ‘Network Connections’ applet. On the left hand side click on ‘Create new connection’. Select ‘Connect to the network at my workplace’ and click ‘Next’.

6. Select ‘Virtual Private Network Connection’ and click ‘Next’.
7. Give the connection a friendly name and click ‘Next’ to continue.

8. Enter the name of the VPN server as shown the click ‘Next’.
9. Set the ‘Create this connection for’ option to ‘My use only’ and click ‘Next’.
10. If you want to create a shortcut on the desktop check the ‘Add a shortcut to my desktop’ (recommended). Click ‘Finish’ to complete the setup of the VPN connection.

2.3 Connecting to Massey University 1. Ensure that you have an active connection to the internet. This usually involves dialling your ISP (e.g. Xtra) unless you have a permanent connection (e.g. ADSL). 2. On the desktop locate and double click the ‘Massey VPN’ icon. 3. Enter your username and password then click on ‘Connect’ to establish a connection. Note – Normally you would need to connect to your ISP then connect to Massey’s network via VPN You can alter the properties of your VPN connection by clicking on ‘Properties’ in the ‘Connect Massey VPN’ dialogue box so that you can specify a connection that must be dialled before using the VPN connection. Using this option will automate the dialling and connection processes.
Simply tick the ‘Dial another connection first’ option box and select the correct connection from the list. Click ‘OK’ to save your settings.

2.4 Using your VPN Connection • To browse the internet, make sure your LAN settings are set to Automatically detect settings. To do this: 1. Open up Internet Explorer 2. Click on the Tools menu and scroll down to Internet Options 3. Click on the Connections tab 4. Click on the LAN Settings Icon 5. Tick the Automatically detect settings box. • Telnet Applications Your computer is now connected to the Massey University network. However, as you are also connected to the Internet you may find that services, such as Telnet, are unable to easily locate the servers to which you are trying to connect. In order to assist these programs it is recommended that, where possible, you add the domain suffix ‘.massey.ac.nz’ to the name of the machine to which you are trying to connect. For example ‘its-unix1’ becomes ‘its-unix1.massey.ac.nz’
