Principal objective of Windows XP Start Menu: Drastic changes in Windows XP Professional:

STEP 1 a) System boots b) Welcome screen appears c) Click on username d) Log in with the password. e) System authenticates the user and grants access. STEP 2 Desktop appears Different from Windows 2000: THE My Computer, My Documents, do not appear on desktop My network places they can be enabled Internet Explorer STEP 3 1. Appearance: a) Click on the Start Menu icon (bottom left corner of the screen) b) Missing icons are now located in the Start menu. c) Start menu is divided in 2 parts: 1. Left side: list of programs frequently used 2. Right side: My Computer and My Network Places. Also contains: Control Panel, Printers and Faxes, and the search and run function icons.
3. Access My Computer: a) Click the Start icon b) Click on the My Computer icon (for a faster access) 4-5. Option 1 to customize Windows XP Start Menu: a) Right click on Start Menu icon (in the lower left bottom of the screen) b) Select Properties c) Click on the Taskbar tab. d) You can choose options to change how Start Menu and Taskbar work. e) Click on some of the radio boxes to de/select options until Start Menu is as you like it. f) When finished, click the Start menu tab. 6. A new interface to manipulate the Start Menu a) Click the Customize button: this button provides a new interface to manipulate the Start menu: b) Change the setting to use Small icons rather than the large ones. c) Deselect the Internet and E-mail radio buttons located on the bottom of the dialog box.: they will no longer appear in the Start menu d) The user can go back and select these boxes if they want them to be quickly available in the Start Menu.
7. PROGRAMS SECTION: It is possible to change programs for quick selection on the Start menu: a) Change the amount to 11 b) Click OK: first box should disappear. c) Click the Apply button d) Click the OK button: You should see the new changes on the Start Menu. STEP 4: ENABLING ICONS: a) Right click the mouse placed on the desktop. b) Scroll down and click on Properties button: The Display Properties dialog box will be displayed. c) Select the Desktop tab: this will bring the menu that will allow user to change the desktop feature. d) Click on the Customize Desktop button (in the bottom left corner of the properties box): this will bring a dialog box for the user to make further adjustment to the desktop. e) Select which icons you want to display on the desktop. f) You may also change the icons appearance or run the the desktop cleanup tool.
The Web tab allows Web pages to be displayed on the desktop. A user may also lock the desktop items to prevent moving or resizing of web items on the desktop
