Learning to Use the Garmin eTrex Legend Handheld GPS 1. Review the “Quick Start Guide” in the Master Educator Kit. (The resource CD also contains a PDF of the Garmin “eTrex Legend Owner’s Manual.”) 2. Become familiar with the function of the buttons on the GPS Unit. See Figures 1 and 2.

3. Watch the instructional DVD “Using Your Garmin eTrex Legend” selections on Operating overview, Using the map, Making waypoints, Find places, and Routes and tracks. 4. Also, you should review the PowerPoint on the resource CD –“GPS Training.” 5. Practice outside with the GPS unit before teaching the workshop. Become familiar with moving through the various menus, icons and using the Click Stick. Remember: All of the information to work the GPS can be found on five main pages. See Figure 3. Figure 3

Area Calculation When teaching about the environment of livestock the GPS unit can be used to calculate the area of a large feedlot, dry lot, or pasture to figure square feet per animal or the number of animals per acre. Here are the steps for calculating area: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Select Main Menu and then select Accessories Select Area Calculation Select “Start” and Walk Area Perimeter Select “Stop” After Walking Area Perimeter Use Click Stick to Change Area Calculation Measures to acres, feet, miles, etc. To reset Area Calculation go to Options Menu Button select Reset.

Marking and Finding Waypoints Waypoints can be used to note and to find locations to take measurements using the TI84, CBL2 and various probes. Here is how to mark and find waypoints. See Figure 4. 1. Select Main Menu, then Select the Mark icon 2. To change symbol: (a) select with Click Stick; and (b) find desired symbol 3. To change name Location: (a) select with Click Stick; (b) use drop-down alphabet menu; (c) click OK 4. To change Location: (a) select with Click Stick; (b) use dropdown number menu; (c) click OK 5. Select OK to Save 6. From here you can GoTo – Navigate or Map – Maps Location Note: The instructional DVD provides a shortcut on marking way points. Figure 4

To find a waypoint follow these steps: 1. Select Main Menu, Find, Waypoints. See Figure 5. 2. Or use Find Button, Waypoints

Using the Compass The compass on the Navigation Page can be used to find the direction of the wind and to navigate to a waypoint. See Figure 6

The Map Page The Map Page displays your current location and direction of movement using a triangular “Position Icon that is centered on the Map. As you travel, the map display leaves a track log (“trail”) of your movements. The map also displays geographic features such as rivers, lakes, towns and highways. See Figure 7.
