Industrial Application of Computers Course Code : CS 401 Asim Ismail
M.Sc. I.T. Software Development University of the West of Scotland
B.Sc. Chemical Engineering Punjab University, Lahore
Objectives After completing this course students are expected to have a good understanding of the following aspects. Computer application areas in Textile industry. Use of computer at various management levels in Industry. Use of spread sheets to calculate, Present and Analyze engineering data. Use of different Statistical methods to analyze engineering data. Use of Minitab(TM) software . Use of different mathematical techniques to solve engineering problems. Use of MatLab(TM) software. The overall course objective is to provide the student with the background to understand and work with computer systems for data acquisition, analysis, display and control of Textile processes.
Being a Textile Engineering student how will you make good use of computers ?
What is data and information? Data
is a plural of word Datum which means fact. Word ‘data’ means a collection of facts. Data is represented by symbols i.e. 1,4,5,9,0 or A,B,G,T,R or %, ?, $. Not all data make sense to a person when looking at the data.
Take a look at the following data and tell me does it make sense to you?
What is Information ? Data
is a raw material for information. Information is data but not in raw shape. Information is relevant data, produced as a result of some process. Information is knowledge that makes sense and produce meaning full results.
The data shown in the previous example was of no use but after doing some processing on that data we can produce information from that data which makes sense to us.
What is computer? A
computer is a fast and accurate data manipulating system that is designed to automatically accept and store input data. Process them and produce output results under the directions of a stored program. Just like a Textile process where raw material is fed into a process and product is produced as a result of that process. Computers also take raw material (Data) process them and produce output. Data Computer information.
What is computer program? No
body can do a job unless he is told the way to do the job. Same is for the computer. A computer does know by itself how to perform a particular job. Then how do we expect a computer to perform some task? Answer to this question is ‘computer program’ !!!! So we give a detailed set of instructions to the computer for performing a typical task. These instructions are computer programs. A computer manipulates data based on a detailed set of instructions called
What is software? Computer
instructions or data. Anything that can be stored electronically is software. Software is often divided into two categories: Systems software: Includes the operating system and all the utilities that enable the computer to function. Application
software: Includes programs that do real work for users. For example, word processors, spreadsheets, and database management systems fall under the category of applications software.
Some Application Software
Word Processing Microsoft word, Open Office Word. Spread Sheet Microsoft Excel, lotus, open Office spread sheet. Presentation Microsoft Power point Database Management Software Microsoft Access, MS SQL SERVER, ORACLE, FOXPRO Statistical Analysis Software MiniTab Mathematical Software MatLab
Paint programs: Allow you to create rough freehand drawings. MS Paint. Illustration/design programs: Supports more advanced features than paint programs, particularly for drawing curved lines. The images are usually stored in vector -based formats. Illustration/design programs are often called draw programs. Coral Draw, Photo Shop, Fireworks Animation software: Enables you to chain and sequence a series of images to simulate movement. Each image is like a frame in a movie. MacroMedia Flash , Swish Drawing / CAD software: Enables architects and engineers to draft designs. AutoCad, Microsft Visio. Desktop publishing: Provides a full set of wordprocessing features as well as fine control over placement of text and graphics, so that you can create newsletters, advertisements, books, and other types of documents. CAD Computer Aided Designing CAM Computer Aided Manufacturing
Computer systems used to design and manufacture products. The term CAD/CAM implies that an engineer can use the system both for designing a product and for controlling manufacturing processes
CAD is broad term used to represent use of computer in designing.
CAM is term that denotes the computerized control of manufacturing process.
Almost all industry sectors are using CAD in their designing departments.
CAD can help to draw building designs for Architects and civil engineers, textile designs for textile industry etc…
We should not confuse CAD only with drawings. CAD covers many aspects of designing like design calculations, data analysis and simulations.
Commonly used software used for CAD are AUTO CAD, MS VISIO, Smart Draw etc…
Communication Software A broad range of communication software is used for transferring the data from one location to another. Simplest example is Email. Messenger service. (That’s what most people do on net!!!) Simulation software The process of imitating a real phenomenon with a set of mathematical formulas. In theory, any phenomena that can be reduced to mathematical data and equations can be simulated on a computer. In addition to imitating processes to see how they behave under different conditions, simulations are also used to test new theories. After creating a theory of causal relationships, the theorist can codify the relationships in the form of a computer program. If the program then behaves in the same way as the real process, there is a good chance that the proposed relationships are correct. Simulation enables the learner to experience the operation of the target equipment without possibility of destroying the equipment. Simulation software have wide spread application in the industry. Simulations are used for training and evaluation purposes.
Financial
& Accounting Systems Are used to maintain the accounts of an organization on a computer. E.g. Sage, Accountant+,SAP They consist of many parts i.e. A/R Accounts receivable, A/R Accounts Payable, general ledger, stock control systems, Sales order processing system and payroll systems. Accounting systems are usually integrated within many departments of an organization.

weaving unit have following Electric motors; 10 @ 3.5 KW 12 @ 2 KW 15 @ 4 KW 10 @ 10 KW 13 @ 4.5 KW Due to frequent load shedding the management is planning to build a generator, You are asked to calculate the total load in HP so management can choose an engine to be fitted in the generator. Please use excel to make these calculations
