Rachel Price Mills Park Middle School 7th Grade Science Cells Unit Learning Segment: Protists

Central Focus This lesson series is designed to teach students about protists and the role they play in both the environment and students’ lives. The central focus of this learning segment is protists are an important part of the ecosystem. I am teaching this content because students should be aware of examples of single-celled organisms in order to understand that there is more to life than what they can see with their eyes. Protists are a diverse group of eukaryotic organisms that include euglenas, volvoxes, amoebas, and paramecium. Students need to know how each of the four protists mentioned move, obtain energy, and reproduce. Learning this supports their understanding of what it takes to be classified as living. Additionally, students should be able to describe any special features these four protists have. An example of a special feature would be the red eye spot that helps a euglena detect light. Learning the special features reinforces their knowledge of how the protist moves and gets its energy. By developing an understanding of what these protists do, students will be able to apply their knowledge to other protists an understand the impact microorganisms have on their life. State Standards Essential Standard: 7.L.1 Understand the processes, structures and functions of living organisms that enable them to survive, reproduce and carry out the basic functions of life. Clarifying Objectives: 7.L.1.1 Compare the structures and life functions of single-celled organisms that carry out all of the basic functions of life including • Euglena • Amoeba • Paramecium • Volvox

Science Practice Skills ● Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information ○ Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information in 6-8 builds on K-5 experiences and progresses to evaluating the merit and validity of ideas and methods. Gather, read, and synthesize information from multiple appropriate sources and assess the credibility, accuracy, and possible bias of each publication and methods used, and describe how they are supported or not supported by evidence. (MS-LS1-8)

Real World Phenomenon

Organisms can be very small and still meet all of the characteristics of life (move, eat, reproduce). Learning Objectives Lesson 1: Pond Water Lab ● Students will be able to use a microscope to examine pond water. ● Students will be able to draw conclusions based on observations. Lesson 2: Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes ● Students will be able to compare and contrast eukaryotes and prokaryotes. ● Students will be able to describe the components of an explanation. Lesson 3: Protist Trading Cards ● Students will be able to define the term protist. ● Students will be able to identify four protists. Lesson 4: Protist Lab ● Students will be able to explain the relationship between structure and function. Lesson 5: Protist One Pager ● Students will be able to obtain credible information from two sources through research. ● Students will be able to identify a living organism as a protist using the definition. ● Students will be able to explain the positive or negative impact a protist has on the environment. ● Students will be able to create a visual that communicates the role protist play on their environment.
