Sand and water areas are useful resources for social studies learning. As children play with natural materials, they are constructing physical knowledge. Sand and water centres may not be available every day, but they should be regular centres. Block building invites children to work together. Children seek each other's help, working together as they build. Storage of blocks is easiest on open shelves with a place on the shelf for each shape and size. When blocks are stored in this manner, children can see all of the possibilities for constructing and can find the right block for the right job. Here children can read by themselves or with a friend; they can curl up in a big, overstuffed chair or use a pillow on the floor. To reinforce children's social studies experiences, you need to offer all types of books at all reading levels appropriate for children's use.
