General Troubleshooting:

A. DIRECTX 6 In order for your game to properly work, your computer's hardware drivers (the software you install for your sound and video cards) must be fully compatible to work with Microsoft DirectX 6. The software is provided to you on the Test Drive 5 CD-Rom, however you must still ensure that your computer is capable of running DirectX 6 with no conflicts. To check your DirectX status:

OK:

1. Click on Start 2. Next Click Run 3. Type in "C:\Program Files\directx\setup\dxdiag.exe" and click 4. The DirectX Diagnostics Tool should show up:

If either your DISPLAY(s) or SOUND shows up as "Uncertified" you must contact your sound or video card manufacturer and get newer drivers that are "Certified" by Microsoft to work with DirectX 6. This may be the case even if you have just purchased your computer system, as drivers are regularly updated as often as 3 or 4 times per year.

If you do not know what brand sound card and video card you have:

B. INSTALLATION PROBLEMS

If you are having problems getting the game to install, there are a few general troubleshooting steps you can take to help things along: 1. First of all, make sure you have enough hard drive space. You must allow for an extra 50 MB of Hard Drive space (on top of the minimum hard drive requirements) in order for the files to be copied and expanded onto your hard drive. 2. You may have old files in your C:\Windows\Temp directory. If you have any files located here prior to installation, it is best to delete these files. 3. If you have any programs or utilities running during installation, you should turn those programs off ( See section D - Software conflict ).

C.

IN-GAME PERFORMANCE

There are some options you can change while in the game to improve performance. View Distance If you notice that the game is moving at a slow framerate, pause the game and use the View Distance control bar. The default setting would be for maximum view. This means that as much as possible is drawn in on the screen so there is no "pop-up" effect. On lower end machines this can make the game move slowly in some spots. Turn the view distance down to mid-way or lower to improve performance. Screen Resolution In the options menu, under graphic options, you will find the Screen Resolution option. If you are having problems with performance or if some textures are missing ( Some buildings and objects are white ) turn down your screen resolution until you get the desired performance. Some cards have many settings, from 1024 x 768 down to 320 x 200, so you may find setting in between these two that works for you.

D. SOFTWARE CONFLICT If you have gone through these troubleshooting steps and your game is still not working properly, this may be the cause of a software conflict. Your system may have one or more utilities running (Virus scanners, Phone answering software, CD Rom utilities, game controller button mappers.) To rule out the possibility of a software conflict, "End Task" all applications (Keep Explorer and Systray running) and try running your game again.

VIDEO CARDS

1. General Video Card Issues and Troubleshooting 3D Accelerator cards with 2MB of RAM or less 3D accelerator cards with at least 4MB of video memory are required to play TEST DRIVE 5. If your 3D video card only has 2MB of RAM, your card is unsupported. Video resolutions above the default setting of 512x384 Some video cards may not support video resolutions above 512x384. If you experience problems with higher video resolutions, try returning your video resolution to the default setting of 512x384. Black boxes surrounding certain in-game objects, such as streetlights and speedometer Some video cards may cause black boxes to appear around transparent objects such as streetlights and the speedometer. This problem can be corrected by enabling the "fixtransparent" setting in the TD5.ini file. See below (Section 5. 3D Card and Controller Troubleshooting) for information on how to change that. 2. Supported 3D Accelerator Cards and Chipsets TEST DRIVE 5 supports the following 3D accelerator cards. 3D accelerator cards not listed, but with supported chipsets may also be acceptable. Check your video card documentation to determine which card/chipset you have. SUPPORTED 3D CARDS ATI Xpert@Work ATI Xpert@Play ATI All-in-Wonder ATI 3D Charger ATI 3D Xpression Canopus Pure3D

3D Card and controller troubleshooting:

The file named TD5.ini in the root Test Drive 5 directory ( the default, unless changed by the user is, C:/Program Files/Accolade/Test Drive 5 ) can be changed to improve or alter 3D video performance. To make changes to this file simply remove or add the # symbol to the function. For example: If you wanted to enable #Device Select you would remove the # symbol from in front of the word Device. To disable this function, add the # symbol to the front of the word Device. A standard text editor such as Windows Notepad can be used to alter this file. Below are the functions available in the TD5.ini file. #Primary If the system contains a Voodoo2 or other separate 3d video card the program will choose it. If you would prefer to use you main (primary) video card use this. #DeviceSelect If the system contains a Voodoo2 or other separate 3d video card the program will choose it. If you would prefer to select each time use this. #NoMovie If you wish to go directly to the options without viewing the movie use this. #TimeDemo If you wish to allow performance tests in the game use this. #FullScreen If you wish to run the game full screen use this (this is the default.)

#Window If you wish to attempt to run the game in a window use this (not recommended.) #DoubleBuffer Some drivers report that they can run with triple buffering and then crash as the race begins. Try using this to fix it. #NoWBuffer Some drivers report that they can do WBuffer but display a mess of triangles during the race. Try using this to fix it. #FixTransparent If black squares appear around some objects try using this to fix it. #FixMovie If movie plays as a blank screen try using this fix.

it.

#NoAGP Some drivers have problems working with AGP textures. Try using this to fix

B.

GAMEPAD/JOYSTICK

If you are trying to run the game and your controller is not responding properly, make sure your controller is set up in your Windows Control Panel before starting Test Drive 5: 1. Click on Start and highlight Settings 2. Next click Control Panel 3. Once your Control Panel is onscreen, double-click on your Game Controller (or Gravis/Microsoft controller) icon. 4. Make sure your game controller is listed and shows a status of "OK". If not, you should "Add" your controller if not listed, or troubleshoot your controller if it is listed as "Not Connected". Click Properties and then Calibrate to calibrate your gamepad, joystick or steering wheel.
