UNLAY THE END OF THE ROPE FOR THREE CENTIMETRES. PUT A LOOP AROUND ONE OF THE STRANDS WITH A TWINE AND BRING OUT BOTH THE ENDS OF THE TWINE. TAKE ONE END ROUND AND ROUND ALL THE STRANDS TOGETHER. CARRY THE END OF TWINE UP TO THE END OF THE ROPE ALONG THE THIRD SPIRAL GROOVE AND TIE IT T OTHE END AND FINISH IT WITH A REEF KNOT BETWEEN THE STRANDS. TRIMM OFF.
b. DRAW HITCH: ALSO CALLED HIGHWAY MAN`S HITCH. IT IS USEFUL TO TIE ANY WHERE; TO UNITE QUICKLY. E.G. POINTER OF BOAT TO A RING, FOR GOING UP AND COMING DOWN AND TAKING THE ROPE BACK.
c. FIREMAN`S CHAIR KNOT : USED FOR LOWERING A PERSON FROM HIGH BUILDING IN CASE OF FIRE OR OTHER EMERGENCY. IT IS TIED AT ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF THE ROPE WITHOUT USING ITS ENDS. THE SHORTER LOOP IS KEPT AROUND THE CHEST UNDER THE ARMPIT, WHEREAS THE LONGER LOOP WILL FUNCTION AS THE SEAT. THE DESCENDING IS DONE VERY CAREFULLY, CHECKING THE UPPER END OF THE ROPE SECURED WITH A TURN AROUND SOME STRONG PILLAR OR POLE.
d. MANHARNESS KNOT: THIS KNOT IS USEFUL WHEN TWO OR THREE PEOPLE HAVE TO HAUL SOMETHING HEAVY LIKE A LOG OF WOOD OR A TREK CART. THE ARM IS INSERTED INTO THE LOOP AND LOAD IS TAKEN ON THE SHOULDER.
e. DIAGONAL LASHING: IT IS USED WHEN TWO SPARS WHICH ACROSSS DIAGONALLY HAVE THE TENDENCY TO SPRING APART, HAVE TO BE LASHED TOGETHER. IT BEGINS WITH A TIMBER HITCH.
f. A TENT : THERE ARE DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF TENTS. TENTS USED BY SCOUTS ARE PITCHED TO MAKE AS RESIDENCE OF 3 MTS X 3 MTS.
TENT PITCHING: THE TENT THAT WE USE IN SCOUTING CAN BE PITCHED IN THE FOLLOWING WAY. EVEN WITH FEW SMALL SCOUTS UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF P.L.: SPREAD THE TENT HAVING FASTENED UP THE DOORS. INSERT THE POLES UPRIGHT AND HORIZONTAL PUSHES THE RUNNERS SO THAT THE GUY LINES ARE VERY SHORT. HAMMER IN PEGS AT A SUITABLE DISTANCE AT THE END OF EACH SHORTENED GUY LINE. NOW TWO SCOUTS GET INSIDE THE TENT AND RAISE THE POLES, OTHER SCOUTS GO AROUND AND TIGHTEN ALL THE GUY LINES. TAKE GREAT CARE THAT THE ROPES ARE NEVER FOULED. DURING RAINS, NOTHING SHOULD TOUCH THE CANVAS.
STRIKING THE TENT: FIRST TAKE OUT THE INNER PEGS AND GUY LINES ATTACHED TO THEM. PULL OUT ALL THE PEGS EXCEPT TWO ON ONE SIDE CORNERS. ROLL UP ALL GUY ROPES, SLOWLY TAKE OFF THE GUY LINES FROM ONE SIDE AND LET THE TENT FALL ON ONE SIDE SLOWLY. RELEASE ALL THE ROPES AND ROLL THEM UP. SET AND FOLD THE CANVAS, PUT THE ROLLS OF ROPES INSIDE THE FOLDS. ROLL UP THE CANVAS NEATLY FROM ONE END LIKE BEDDING. TIGHTEN A GUY ROPE ON THE ROLL. THE TENT SHOULD BE DRY AND CLEAN WHEN IT IS ROLLED UP. PEGS AND POLES OF THE TENT SHOULD ALSO BE PACKED IN A BUNDLE AND KEPT WITH THE TENT.
IMPROVING A TENT OR A SHELTER: ONE MAY USE STAFFS AND SHEETS TO MAKE A TENT. IT SHOULD BE SUFFICIENTLY BIG FOR TWO SCOUTS / GUIDES TO SLEEP IN. ALSO MAKE A SHELTER FROM AVAILABLE MATERIAL LIKE HAY, STRAWS, BAMBOOS, BRANCHES OF TREES ETC. USE CORRECT LASHINGS AND KNOTS WHILE MAKING AN IMPROVED TENT OR SHELTER.
SUCH TENT AND SHELTERS SHOULD BE MADE USE OF DURING A WEEK END CAMPS OR A PATROL HIKE. IT IS A PLEASURE TO STAY IN AHOUSE PREPARED BY OURSELVES.
2. SWIMMING SWIMMING IS THE BEST EXERCISE. EVERY SCOUT / GUIDE SHOULD LEARN SWIMMING AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. S.M. / G.C SHOULD MAKE ALL EFFORTS TO SEE THAT OUR SCOUTS AND GUIDES LEARN SWIMMING AND PRACTISE IT WELL. HOWEVER CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PREVENT ANY ACCIDENT OR MISHAPPENING. FOLLOWING ARE FEW DON`TS TO BE STRICTLY FOLLOWED: NEVER: SWIM ALONE. SWIM WHEN YOU ARE TIRED OR VERY HOT OR JUST AFTER MEALS. SWIM IN STRANGE PLACES. STAY IN TOO LONG. STAY IN IF YOU ARE TIRED OR YOUR FEET ARE COLD. SWIM OUT TO OPEN WATERS (SEA). SWIM ACROSS A RIVER. SWIM AFTER A DRIFTING OBJECT, OR PERSON. FOOL ABOUT WITH OTHERS IN THE WATER. ONE SHOULD USE FLOATING AIR – BADS. THESE ARE THE GOLDEN RULES FOR ALL SCOUTS AND GUIDES. ONLY IGNORANCE AND STUPIDITY CAUSE MOST DEATHS IN DROWNING. A SCOUT / GUIDE SHOULD BE ABLE TO SWIM EASILY AROUND FIFTY METRES FOR THE TEST IN THE TRITYA SOPAN.
MUSCLE CRAMP IN SWIMMING: THIS IS DUE TO SUDDEN INVOLUNTARY AND PAINFUL CONTRACTION OF A VOLUNTARY MUSCLE OR A GROUP OF MUSCLES. IT IS CAUSED DUE TO CHILLING OR TIREDNESS DURING SWIMMING.
IN CASE OF SUCH MUSCLE CRAMP, THE SWIMMER SHOULD BREATHE IN DEEPLY AND REMAIN STEADY ON WATER FOR SOME TIME. THEN SLOWLY TRY TO COME TO THE SHORE. ASK FOR HELP. NEVER LOOSE CONFIDENCE. AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE TEST OF SWIMMING, YOU HAVE TO ACQUIRE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PROFICIENCY BADGES: 1. ATHLETE 2. CLIMBER 3. GYMNAST (FOR GUIDES).
4. HIKER (FOR SCOUTS) / CAMELMAN
5. YOGA. THE RULES OF ACQUIRING A PROFICIENCY BADGE ARE GIVEN BEFORE HAND. CONSULT YOUR S.M. / G.C. REFER THE BOOK A.P.R.O PART 2 OR 3 FOR THE TESTS OF THESE BADGES. PREPARE FOR ANY SUITABLE BADGE AND GET EXAMINED BEFORE THE DISTRICT COMMITTEE THROUGH YOUR S.M/G.C .
3. ESTIMATION:
A. TO ESTIMATE HEIGHT UPTO 30 METRE: 1. TWELVE TO ONE METHOD : FROM THE OBJECT TO (SAY A TREE) PACE 11 UNITS WITH A STICK AND GET SOME ONE TO HOLD A STAFF AT THE ELEVENTH POINT. NOW PACE ONE MORE UNIT IN THE SAME DIRECTION AND LIE ON THE GROUND KEEPING YOUR EYE NEAREST TO THE TWELTH POINT AND LOOKING TOWARDS THE TOP OF THE OBJECT (TREE). YOUR SIGHT CUTS THE STAFF AT SOME POINT. MARK THAT POINT ON THE STAFF. MEASURE THE HEIGHT OF THAT POINT IN INCHES, THE OBJECT IS THAT MANY FEET HIGH i.e. IT IS TWELVE TIMES HIGHER.
2. LUMBERMAN`S METHOD: IN THIS METHOD YOU HAVE TO IMAGINE THE STANDING OBJECT AS IF IT LAY ON THE GROUND. HOLD A SIGHTING STICK AT FULL ARM`S LENGTH FROM A DISTANCE. NOW ALINE THE TOP OF THE STICK AND THAT OF THE OBJECT. ALSO SLIDE YOUR THUMB AND BASE OF THE OBJECT IN A LINE. THEN MAKE THE STICK HORIZONTAL, KEEPING THE BASE AND YOUR THUMB IN THE SAME LINE. NOTE THE POINT WHERE THE TOP OF THE STICK TOUCHES THE GROUND. MEASURE THE DISTANCE FROM THAT POINT TO THE BASE OF THE OBJECT THAT IS THE HEIGHT OF THE OBJECT.
3. SHADOW METHOD: COMPARE THE SHADOW OF THE OBJECT T OTHE SHADOW OF SOMETHING SAY A FRIEND WHOSE HEIGHT IS KNOWN TO YOU. USE THE FOLLOWING FORMULA TO FIND OUT THE HEIGHT OF THAT OBJECT: HEIGHT OF THE OBJECT LENGTH OF ITS SHADOW
=
HEIGHT OF THE FRIEND LENGTH OF HIS SHADOW
4. RED INDIAN METHOD: TRY TO JUDGE THE HEIGHT OF THE OBJECT APPROXIMATELY AND MOVE THAT MUCH AWAY FROM THE OBJECT KEEPING YOUR BACK TOWARDS THE OBJECT. NOW, BEND FORWARD AND TRY TO SEE THE TOP OF THE OBJECT AT THE TOP OF YOUR LEGS. YOUR BENDING DOWN SHOULD BE CORRECT THAT IS YOUR SIGHT ANGLE SHOULD BE 45⁰. MEASURE THE DISTANCE THE POINT YOU ARE STANDING AND THE OBJECT THAT IS THE HEIGHT OF THAT OBJECT YOU IMAGINE AN ISOSCELES RIGHT ANGLED TRIANGLE. THERE ARE OTHER METHODS ALSO E.G. PENCIL METHOD, UNIT METHOD ETC. BY PRACTISING YOU CAN MASTER SOME METHODS.
B. TO ESTIMATE THE DEPTH UPTO 30 METRES: 1. USE A ROPE OR A TWINE WITH SOME HEAVY OBJECT TIED TO IT. LET IT REACH THE BOTTOM. MEASURE THE ROPE. IT IS THE DEPTH. 2. FOR MEASURING THE DEPTH OF AN OPEN WELL. IF YOU SEE THE EQUAL LAYERS OF BRICKS OR MASONARY WORK, COUNT THE LAYERS AND MULTIPLY BY THE HEIGHT OF EACH LAYER. (UNIT METHOD).
C. TO ESTIMATE WEIGHT UPTO 8 KILOGRAMMES:
YOU CANNOT ESTIMATE THE HEIGHT WITHOUT LIFTING THE OBJECT BECAUSE THE MASS AND DENSITY VARIES FOR DIFFERENT MATERIALS LIKE IRON, WOOD, STONE AND ALUMINIUM ETC. PRACTISE TO FEEL THE WEIGHT FROM SMALLER TO BIGGER WEIGHTS UPTO 100 GMS, 200 GMS, and 500 GMS AND SO ON. PLAY THIS AS A GAME BY BLIND FOLDING YOURSELVES. TO MEASURE APPROXIMATELY WITH AN IMPROVED APPRATUS, THERE IS SUGGESTED METHOD:
A
TAKE A STICK OR ROD OF EQUAL THICKNESSTHROUGHOUT ITS LENGTH. KNOW THE WEIGHT OF ONE OBJECT LIKE YOUR SHOE, KNIFE, TORCH, CAP ETC. NOW HANG THAT OBJECT TO THE ONE END OF THE STICK (ROD). SIMILIARLY HANG THE OBJECT TO BE WEIGHED TO THE OTHER END. NOW LIFT THE STICK FROM SOME POINT SO THAT THE STICK IS EQUALLY BALANCED. THEN MEASURE THE DISTANCES FROM THE POINT TO BOTH ENDS. USE THE FOLLOWING FORMULA: W1 X D1 = W2 X D2.
OR
W2 = W1 X D1. D2
(WHERE W1 IS THE WEIGHT OF THE KNOWN OBJECT; D1 IS THE DISTANCE FROM THE EQUILIBRIUM POINT. W2 IS THE WEIGHT OF THE OBJECT TO BE WEIGHED AND D2 IS TIS DISTANCE.)
4.
FIRST AID
A. SHOCK: SYMPTOMS OF SHOCK • FEELING COLD • SWEATING •DIFFICULTY IN BREATHING. •THIRST •PALENESS OF LIPS AND FACE • COLD AND MOIST SKIN
•RAPID AND WEAK (FEEBLE) PULSE •DRY TONGUE •SHORT RAPID BREATHING. •UNCONSCIOUSNESS (IF SEVERE).
TREATMENT OF SHOCK: •FIND OUT WHETHER CONSCIOUS. •TRY TO ASCERTAIN THE CAUSE. •LET THE CASUALTY LIE FLAT ON HIS BACK WITH HEAD AT LITTLE LEVEL THAN THE LEGS WHICH ARE LITTLE RAISED. •IF HE VOMITS, TURN HIM TO ONE SIDE. •LOOSEN ALL TIGHT CLOTHINGS. •WIPE OUT ALL SWEAT. •COVER HIM WITH PLAIN SHEET OR BLANKET. •NOTHING IS TO BE GIVEN BY MOUTH EXCEPT SIPS OF WATER OR CRACKED ICE, IF CONSCIOUS. •ARRANGE REMOVAL TO THE HOSPITAL.
B. FAINTING IT IS A TEMPORARY CONDITION CAUSED DUE TO OVER EXERTION, LACK OF FOOD, HEAT, AND STUFFY ATMOSPHERE OR BY FRIGHT, SEEING BLOOD ETC. THE FACE BECOMES PALE, SWEATING OVER FOREHEAD AND FACE STARTS, FEELS WEAK AND SUDDENLY FAINTS.
TREATMENT: •THE CAUSALTY SHOULD BE LAID DOWN FLAT ON BACK. •LOOSEN TIGHT CLOTHINGS.
•PUT HIM IN SHOCK POSITION I.E HEAD LITTLE LOWER AND LEGS LITTLE RAISED. •ENSURE FRESH AIR. •COLD WATER MAY BE SPRINKLED OVER FACE. •SMELLING SALT MAY BE SMELT. •AFTER COMING TO CONSCIOUSNESS (WHICH HAPPENS SOON) THE CASUALTY MAY BE GIVEN A HOT DRINK.
C.CHOKING: IT IS DUE TO FOREIGN BODY OBSTRUCTION IN THE AIRWAY. THE VICTIM CANNOT SPEAK OR BREATHE. HIS FACE BECOMES BLUISH AND COLLAPSES RAPIDLY. THE FOLLOWING FIRST AID MEASURES SHOULD BE STARTED IMMEDIATELY ON THR SPOT AS FOLLOWS: VIGOUROUS AND RAPID BACK BLOWS SHOULD BE GIVEN. FINGER SHOULD BE PROBED INTO THE MOUTH SO THAT THE OBJECT MAY COME OUT WITH THE VOMIT. APPLY HEIMLICH`S MANOEUVRE I.E STAND BEHIND THE CASUALTY AND WRAP YOUR ARMS AROUND HIS DIAPHRAGM (JUST BELOW THE CHEST). GRASP ONE WRIST WITH THE OTHER HAND PLACING THE THUMB SIDE OF THE FIST AGAINST THE VICTIM`S ABDOMEN. THEN PRESS THE FIST WITH FOUR INWARD AND UPWARD JERKS. THE OBJECT WILL COME OUT OF THE MOUTH WITH A PUFF.
D.FRACTURES: BREAKING OR CRACKING OF A BONE IS CALLED A FRACTURE. IT IS CAUSED DUE TO DIRECT OR INDIRECT VIOLENCE. SIGNS OF A FRACTURE: EIPSDUC E – ENERGY, LOSS OF I – IRREGULARITY P – PAIN S – SWELLING
D – DEFORMITY. U – UNNATURAL MOBILITY. C – CREPITUS (CRACKING SOUND).
GENERAL MANAGEMENT: 1. DO NOT TRY TO STRAIGHTEN THE LIMB. 2. COVER THE WOUND (IF ANY) WITH A STERILE DRESSING. NO PRESSURE IS TO BE APPLIED OVER THE BROKEN BONE. 3. DO NOT WASTE TIME OVER ELABORATE AND FANCY DRESSING. 4. USE PLENTY OF PADDING TO FILL NATURAL HOLLOWS. 5. IMMOBILIZE ABOVE AND BELOW THE JOINT. 6. IMMOBILIZE ARM AGAINST TRUNK AND LEG AGAINST OTHER LEG. 7. AVOID USING RIGID SPLINTS. 8. ALWAYS USE PADDING BEFORE BANDAGING. 9. TREAT FOR SHOCK. 10.ARRANGE FOR REMOVAL TO THE HOSPITAL.
FRACTURE OF COLLAR BONE: 1. APPLY LOOSE PADDING IN THE ARMPIT OF AFFECTED SIDE. 2. APPLY BRACES. 3. TIE A TRIANGULAR SLING.
FRACTURE OF ARM: 1. SLOWLY FLEX THE ELBOW AND BRING THE FOREARM AGAINST THE CHEST. 2. TIE A COLLAR AND CUFF SLING. 3. USE A TRANSVERSE BANDAGE AROUND THE CHEST FIXING THE ARM TO THE CHEST.
FRACTURE OF LEG: 1. FILL IN ALL HOLLOWS WITH PADDING. ALSO KNEES AND ANKLES. 2. BRING THE OTHER LEG TO THE FRACTURED ONE 3. TIE BOTH ANKLES WITH A FIGURE OF EIGHT BANDAGE. 4. TIE THE KNEES TOGETHER. 5. TIE BROAD BANDAGES ABOVE AND BELOW THE FRACTURE. 6. IF BOTH THE LEGS ARE FRACTURED, USE TWO LONG PADDED SPLINTS TO THE FEET AND TIE BANDAGES TO THE BODY WITH PADDING IN ALL HOLLOWS.
E.ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION: THE METHOD OF CHOICE IS MOUTH TO NOSE OR MOUTH TO MOUTH RESPIRATION AS FOLLOWS: 1. TURN THE CASUALTY OVER HIS BACK. 2. PUSH THE HEAD BACK AND EXTEND THE NECK. 3. CLEAR THE MOUTH BY WRAPPING HANDKERCHIEF AROUND YOUR FINGERS. 4. TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND SEAL YOUR MOUTH TO THE NOSE OR MOUTH OF THE CASUALTY AND BREATHE IN FIRMLY INTO MOUTH OR NOSE. 5. TURN YOUR HEAD SIDEWAYS AS THE CASUALTY BREATHES OUT. 6. GIVE FIRST FIVE PUFFS RAPIDLY AND THEN BREATHE IN 8 TO 12 PUFFS A MINUTE. 7. WATCH THE RISE OF HIS CHEST. IT MUST RISE WHEN YOU PUFF IN. 8. MAINTAIN THIS RHYTHM FOR ABOUT ONE HOUR OR UNTIL HE BREATHES ON HIS OWN. 9. IF VOMITING OCCURS, TURN HIS HEAD TO ONE SIDE. CLEAN HIS MOUTH AS DONE EARLIER AND START BREATHING IN AGAIN.
5.MAPPING:
A. SCALE: THE MEASUREMENT OF THE GROUND IS SHOWN IN A SMALL PROPORTION ON THE MAP. IT IS INDICATED IN THESE WAYS. 1. IN WORDS: E.G. ONE INCH TO A MILE. 2. AS R.F. (REPRESENTIVE FRACTION) E.G. 1/ 10,000. I.E. ONE UNIT ON THE MAP REPRESENTS TEN THOUSAND SUCH UNITS ON THE GROUND. 3. BY A SCALE LINE: EACH DIVISION OF THE SCALE CORRESPONDS TO THE DISTANCE ON THE GROUND IN THE SAID UNIT OF MEASUREMENT SAY KILOMETRES. REAL DISTANCE CAN BE FOUND OUT BY USING A PAIR OF DIVIDER ON THE MAP. THE MAIN DIVISIONS ARE CALLED ‘PRIMARIES’ WHICH ARE ALWAYS TO THE RIGHT OF THE SMALLER ONES CALLED ‘SECONDARIES’.

CONTOURS: CONTOURS ARE THIN LINES ON THE MAP USUALLY IN BROWN COLOUR SHOWING A DEFINITE ELEVATION ABOVE THE MEAN SEA LEVEL. THE SPACE BETWEEN TWO SUCH CONTOURS SHOW FLATNESS OR STEEPNESS OF THAT AREA.
D.GRID REFERENCE: A MAP IS DIVIDED INTO SQUARES BY NUMBERED LINES CALLED GRID LINES. THEY ARE GENERALLY PINK. THE VERTICAL LINES FROM SOUTH TO NORTH ARE CALLED ‘EASTINGS’ SHOWING DISTANCES IN YARDS TOWARDS THE EAST. SIMILIARLY HORIZONTAL LINES ARE CALLED ‘NORTHINGS’ SHWOING DISTANCE TOWARDS THE NORTH. EVERY TENTH GRID LINE IS DRAWN A LITTLE THICKER. GRID LINES ARE NUMBERED WITH TWO BOLD ROUND DIGITS. THESE GRID LINES LOCATE AND FIX POSITION OF THE OBJECT ON A MAP. SO THIS METHOD IS CALLED GRID REFERENCE. THE SIC FIGURE GRID REFERENCE LIKE 273128 IS READ ON A MAP IN THE FOLLOWING WAY. EASTING NUMBER 27 AND 3 DIVISIONS OF NUMBER 28 (IF IT WERE FURTHER DIVIDED INTO TEN EQUAL PARTS). SIMILIARLY NORTHINGS NUMBER 12 AND 8 DIVISIONS OF NORTHING NUMBER 13. THE INTERSECTING POINT ON THE MAP IS THE PLACE REFERRED TO ON THE GROUND. BY KNOWING THE ABOVE POINTS DISCUSSED, YOU CAN READ A SURVEY OF INDIA MAP.
MAP SETTING: FOR READING A MAP, WE HAVE TO SET THE GIVEN MAP ON THE SAME GROUND. THE FOLLOWING ARE THE MAP SETTING METHODS: 1. WITH THE HELP OF A COMPASS: DRAW THE MAGNETIC NORTH ON THE MAP. LAY THE COMPASS ON THIS NORTH LINE. TURN THE MAP TO SET IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND THE MAP IS SET. 2. WITH THE HELP OF OBJECTS: FIND OUT SOME PROMINENT OBJECTS WHICH ARE ON THE NEARBY GROUND AND ARE ALSO SHOWN IN THE MAP. PLACE A FOOTRULE ON THE MAP AND SEE THE ALIGNMENT AND APPROXIMATE DISTANCE OF SUCH OBJECTS AND SET YOUR MAP
ACCORDINGLY ON THE GROUND. THUS BY SEEING PROMINENT OBJECTS LIKE ROAD, BRIDGE, RIVER, TEMPLE, WELL ETC. THE MAP CAN BE SET. AFTER SETTING THE MAP, YOU CAN READ AND COMPARE KNOWN OR UNKNOWN OBJECTS ON THE GROUND. WITH THE USE OF CONVENTIONAL SIGNS. USE GRID REFERENCE TO SHOW THE EXACT POSITION OF THE MAP. FIND OUT THE ROUTE BOTH ON THE MAP AND ON THE GROUND. YOU MAY DESCRIBE THE ROUTE BY GIVING BEARINGS, PROMINENT OBJECTS ON THE ROUTE AND VARIOUS DISTANCES.
6.PIONEERING
USE OF KNIFE AND AXE AND THEIR SAFETY RULES: KEEP THE TOOLS CLEAN, DRY AND SHARP. DON`T USE IT ON THINGS THAT MAY BLUNT IT. DON`T KEEP IT ON THE GROUND, KEEP AWAY FROM DIRT AND MOISTURE. KEEP IT AWAY FROM FIRE. AFTER EACH USE CLEAN THE BLADE EDGE, GREASE IT AND PUT IT IN ITS SHEATH. SHARPEN YOUR TOOL WITH A SHARPENING (CARBORUNDUM) STONE WHEN NECESSARY.
PATROL PIONEERING PROECTS: PIONEERING IS THE LIFE BLOOD OF SCOUTING. IT IS BUILDING STRUCTURES OF SPARES AND STICKS FOR PRACTICAL USE. IT TESTS VARIOUS SKILLS LIKE KNOTTING, LASHINGS, TEAM WORK, ESTIMATION, USEFULNESS AND OTHER SCOUT CRAFTS. ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO BE HELPFUL TO OTHERS BY YOUR SKILL OF PIONEERING, OBSERVATION, THINKING, WILLINGNESS TO SERVE, MANAGEMENT, OBEDIENCE ETC. THESE ARE SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL VIRTUES NECESSARY FOR UNDERTAKING SUCH PROJECTS. START WITH SMALL PROJECTS BY PATROLS. PLANOUT THE PROJECTS IN A PATROL MEETING: WHAT DO WE NEED? WHERE DO WE GET?
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? WHERE IS IT DONE? HOW LONG HAVE WE TO COMPLETE? WHO WILL DO WHAT AND IN WHAT ORDER? HOW TO DO THE WHOLE OF IT IN ORDER? ONE HAS TO LEAD; HE SHOULD BE AN EXPERIENCED FELLOW. CREATE INTEREST IN THE SUBJECTS. TRUST HIS SKILL. HAVE CONFIDENCE. PIONEERING, TRAINING SHOULD BE CONTINUOUS AND PROGRESSIVE RIGHT FROM THE PRATHAM SOPAN. INTER – PATROL COMPETITIONS SHOULD BE OFTEN ARRANGED. NOT THE TIME BUT THE CORRECTNESS AND USEFULNESS OF THE PROJECT IS MORE ESSENTIAL. USE KNOTS, LASHINGS, MEASUREMENT, AND GEARS ETC CORRECTLY.
SOME PIONEERING PROJECTS SUGGESTED: A SWING
TILT TOWER
PYRAMID TOWER
CAMP CAT
TRESTIE - A CHARIOT. A COMMANDO BRIDGE
MONKEY BRIDGE. .
A SUSPENSION BRIDGE A BIG GATE
A LADDER BRIDGE. A DERRICK A SINGLE LOCK BRIDGE.
REQUIREMENTS FOR PIONEERING : SPARS, BAMBOOS, STAFFS, ROPES, CORDS, TWINWS, MALLET, PEGS – LONG AND SHORT, PULLEYS (SINGLE AND DOUBLE), AXE, KNIFE, SAW, HAMMER, CROWBAR, CHOPPER ETC.
WHILE PLANNING A PROJECT, FIRST DRAW IT IN RIGHT PROPORTION. FIND OUT THE REQUIREMENTS (QUANTITY, MEASUREMENT, COST ETC) AND GET THEM. DECIDE WHO WILL DO WHICH PART AND IN WHAT ORDER. THEN EXECUTE YOUR PLAN UNDER SOEMBODY`S LEADERSHIP. ON COMPLETION OF YOUR TEST REQUIREMENT, UNDO EVERYTHING IN ORDER. DON`T CUT ROPES OR TWINES OR BAMBOOS OR
SPARS. SLOWLY UNTIE KNOTS AND LASHINGS. PUT ALL THINGS IN ORDER – NEAT AND CLEAN. FILL IN THE HOLES, IF ANY DONE ON THE GROUND. CLEAN THE PLACE.
OVERNIGHT SCOUT CAMP: NO SCOUTING WITHOUT CAMPING. A CAMP PROVIDES YOU ALL OPPURTUNITIES TO LEARN AND PRACTISE VARIOUS SKILLS, ATTITUDES AND TO DEVELOP ALL VIRTUES AS A GOOD SCOUT OR GUIDE. START WITH A WEEKEND CAMP FOR ONE NIGHT, THEN OF LONGER DURATIONS. THERE ARE DIFFERENT CAMPS FOR TRAINING, PRACTISING, ACQUIRING AND TESTING DIFFERENT ASPECTS SUCH AS SKILLS AND BADGES. IN A CAMP ALWAYS OBEY THE RULES STRICTLY. DUTIES OF THE PATROLS AND INDIVIDUALS MUST BE PERFORMED READILY AS PER THE INSTRUCTIONS OF YOUR LEADERS. BE SMART AND ACTIVE. BE PUNCTUAL. BE TIDY. UTILIZE EVERY OPPURTUNITY IN DOING USEFUL ACTIVITIES. KEEP YOUR EYES, EARS AND MIND OPEN WHILE OBSERVING NATURE. PUT YOUR SKILLS INTO PRACTISE AND LEARN NEW SKILLS. REMEMBER THE OBJECT OF THE CAMP AND TRY TO ACHIEVE IT. ALWAYS BE CHEERFUL AND HELPFUL TO YOUR FELLOW CAMPERS AND OTHER PEOPLE OR INSTITUTIONS YOU MEET AND STAY WITH. SCOUTING IS FUN AND ADVENTURE. WRITE DOWN THE REPORT OF YOUR CAMP INCLUDING YOUR OWN PROGRESS AND IMPRESSION. SUBMIT IT TO YOUR S.M. / G.C. / EXAMINER.
HIKING FOR SCOUTS IT IS 15 KMS ON FOOT OR 50 KMS ON BICYCLE. FOR GUIDES IT IS IN A PATROL 10 KMS ON FOOT OR 25 KMS ON BICYCLE. BEFORE UNDERTAKING THIS HIKE THE SCOUT / GUIDE SHOULD DONE SOME CAMPS AND SHORTER HIKES. THIS TEST IS DONE BY SCOUT INDIVIDUALLY (NOT IN A GROUP) WHEREAS FOR GUIDES IT IS TO BE DONE AS A PATROL HIKE (NOT THE WHOLE COMPANY). THIS HIKE SHOULD BE PLANNED BY THE SCOUT HIMSELF OR BY THE GUIDES IN THEIR PATROL. IT IS A HIKE FOR TEST. THIS IS GENERALLY AN OVERNIGHT HIKE. HIKE IS IN AN UNKNOWN AREA (SHOULD BE KNOWN BY THE S.M. / G.C. / EXAMINER).
DISTRICT AUHTORITIES OF OUR ORGANISATION PERMIT AND RECOGNISE IN ADVANCE AS PER THE RULES OF THE BHARAT SCOUTS AND GUIDES. GET PERMISSION OF YOUR PARENTS ALSO. YOUR S.M. / G.C. / EXAMINER GIVES YOU NECESSARY INSTRUCTIONS OR ROUTE MAP FOR THIS HIKE. FOLLOW THEM. ALWAYS KEEP THE SCOUT / GUIDE LAW AND PROMISE AS YOUR BEST GUIDE. BE IN PROPER AND COMPLETE UNIFORM. TAKE ALL NECESSARY THINGS LIKE LIGHT BEDDING, UTENSILS, TOILET EQUIPMENTS, PROVISIONS FOR FOOD, CORD, KNIFE, HAND AXE, COMPASS, FIRST AID KIT , NOTE BOOK ETC. DURING THE HIKE CARRY OUT OBSERVATION, COLLECTION, GOOD TURNS, GATHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE AREA, ITS PEOPLE, PRODUCTS, IMPORTANT PALCES, SALIENT FEATURES. COOK YOUR OWN MEALS IN A TIDY WAY. BE FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL TO OTHERS. SUBMIT THE REPORT OF YOUR HIKING TO YOUR S.M. / G.C. / EXAMINER. THE BHARAT SCOUTS AND GUIDES HAVE PREPARED RULES FOR CAMPING, HIKING, TREKKING ETC. READ THEM WELL AND FOLLOW THEM. THEY ARE FOR YOUR GUIDANCE.
COOKING COOKING IS AN ART AS WELL AS SCIENCE. PREPARE FIRE (CHULHA) AS PER YOUR NEED. IN YOUR PREPARATION OF A DISH, TRY OUT TO BRING IN VARIETIES, TASTE, NOURISHMENT, QUANTITY AND THRIFT NOVELTY ETS. IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO PREPARE ITEMS WITHOUT MUCH OF UTENSILS, BE THRIFTY IN USING MORE UTENSILS, FIREWOOD AND UNNECESSARY SPICES. THE MEALS SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT FOR TWO PERSONS.
PLAN AND PARTICIPATE IN A PATROL EXPEDITION SCOUTING IS A MOVEMENT OF YOUNG PEOPLE WHO LIKE FUN AND ADVENTURE. SCOUTS AND GUIDES ARE ALWAYS EAGER TO SHOW THEIR KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE IN PRACTISE. THERE IS NO OTHER OCCASION TO SHOW THEM ALL AT THE TIME BUT EXPEDITION. STUDY WELL IN COURSE OF YOUR EXPEDITION IN YOUR PATROL MEETINGS. PLAN IT WELL IN ADVANCE. TELL ABOUT IT TO D.A. / S.A., OTHER PEOPLE AND ORGANISATIONS LIKE FOREST DEPARTMENT, HOME GUARDS, POLICE, LOCAL AUTHORITIES, PRESS ETC. WHO WILL BE HELPFUL TO YOU. TAKE HELP AND GUIDANCE FROM LOCAL PEOPLE AND VOLUNTARY AGENCIES OR SERVICE ORGANISATION. CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENTS AND TOOLS. ARRANGE FOR THEIR REPAIRS BEFORE THE EVENT. ALTERNATIVES SHOULD ALSO BE THOUGHT OF BEFORE HAND. FIX YOUR TARGET. LET EVERY MEMBER OF YOUR PATROL KNOW HIS / HER DUTY AND PERFORM IT SERIOUSLY WELL. FOLLOW YOUR LEADER. KEEP THE RECORD OF SUCH
