Components of Transportation System

A transportation system is a fundamental part of planning and logistics of transporting passengers and goods. Its purpose is to systematize the movement of people, goods and vehicles in order to utilize routes most efficiently. Transportation systems aims to reduce transport costs and improve delivery times through effective timetabling and route management. Periodic reevaluations and the development of alternative routes allow for timely changes to the transportation system in order to maintain efficiency. There are four core components of a transportation system. First is the mode, these represent the conveyances, these are usually in the form of vehicles which are used to transport passengers or freight. Some modes are designed to carry only passengers or freight, while others can carry both. The second component is the infrastructure, these are the physical support of transport modes. It includes routes like rail tracks, canals, and highways and also terminals like ports and airports. Infrastructures also includes superstructures, these are movable assets which have a shorter lifespan. For an instance, in an airport, the infrastructure would be the runways while the superstructure would be the terminals and control equipment. On the other hand, for a port, the infrastructure would be piers and navigation channels and superstructure would be cranes and yard equipment. The third component is the network, it is a system of linked locations that are used to represent the functional and spatial organization of transportation. Connected locations and how they are serviced are indicated by this system. Some locations are more accessible than other in a network. And lastly, the last component is the flow. It is the movement of people, freight, and information over their respective networks. Origins, intermediary locations and destinations forms flows. To go from an origin to a destination, an intermediary location of often required. For example, a transit at hub airport may be required to fly from one airport to another. Transportation system could be very beneficial when implemented properly. It could increase the efficiency of vehicle use and therefore reducing transport costs.
