TOTAL HARMONIC DISTORTION AND TRANSFER FUNCTIONS
DEFINITION OF THD The total harmonic distortion of a signal is defined as the ratio of sum of powers of all harmonic components to the power of the fundamental frequency.
FEATURES OF THD THD is used in linear time invariant system. THD is the measure of the extent of the distortion in a signal. THD is expressed in percentage as distortion factor THD is expressed in db as distortion factor. The Power THD can be as greater as 100% and it is known as IEEE.
DEFINITION OF TANSFER FUNCTION
A Transfer function is a mathematical representation interms of spacial or temporary frequency of the relation between the input and output of linear time invariant system.
COMMON TRANSFER FUNCTION FAMILIES
MATCHED FILTER BUTTERWORTH FILTER CHEBYSHEV FILTER BESSEL FILTER ELLIPTIC FILTER GAUSSIAN FILTER
CONTROL ENGINEERING The transfer functions are the primary tools used in control engineering, here the trasfer function is derived using the laplace transform.
DISADVATAGE OF THD Higher THD allows the components in a loudspeaker amplifier or other equipment to produce a poor reproduction by increasing harmonics added by electronics and audio media.
CONCLUSION As the higher THDs produces a poor reproduction of audio signals. The electronic circuits are designed in such a way so as to reduce the THD.
