Alam nyo ba? SYMBOL OF PROFESSIONALISM, RESPONSIBILITY

LRTA unveils new uniforms TRAIN operators of the LRT Lines 1 and 2 will now be sporting new uniforms as part of its ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS) certification process. The new upper uniform is a light blue short-sleeved polo, with black tie, black shoulder epaulets with gold stripes and a brass nameplate engraved with the LRTA insignia pinned on the uniform and dark blue slacks. Completing the ensemble is a black operator’s cap with a brass insignia of the LRTA at the center. LRTA Administrator Melquiades Robles said the new uniform is based on international standards and is a symbol of professionalism and responsibility upon the train operators. The LRTA launched its ISO 9001 QMS Project on Oct. 8 with DOTC Secretary Leandro Mendoza in attendance. The LRTA management decided to have its Line 1 Train Operations Division (TOD) audited first to set a benchmark in the organization, which can be replicated in the Line 2 TOD, followed by other processes in the entire LRTA system. “We want the operations processes of

our Line 1 TOD to be certified in the ISO 9001 standards as this division is undeniably at the core of the entire LRTA operation and existence,” Robles explained. The Train Operations Division performs the critical functions of scheduling, manning, and the running of the daily train operations, consistent with the LRTA’s vision of providing safe, reliable, efficient and effective mass rail transit services. Robles added by acquiring the ISO 9001 certification, the LRTA shall enjoy the same status as other top notch organizations and rail systems in the world that have demonstrated a full commitment to provide service that consistently conforms to internationally-specified standards, and shall be the first in the rail transportation sector in the country to achieve this. The LRTA is expecting to be awarded the ISO 9001-2008 QMS certification by a third party by May 2010.

Countdown to ‘This Is It’ By Dolly Anne Carvajal JUST like all Michael Jackson diehards, I am counting the days till the MJ movie “This Is It” opens on Oct 28. I will definitely watch it everyday during its limited two-week run. I can’t help but cry each time the trailer is shown because it makes me feel MJ’s passion and determination to outdo himself in his final concert for the sake of his legions of fans. It’s so sad that fate didn’t give him a chance to take one last bow. But come to think of it, legends like him never really say goodbye because MJ stays alive forever through his music. To paraphrase Madonna’s words in her touching tribute to MJ at the MTV Video Awards ’09: “I know what MJ went through because I’ve walked that path before, where one negative story after another is concocted about you. You feel that your voice can no longer be heard amid the shouts persecuting you. MJ was a human being like all of us. But damn, he was and will always be a King.” Nobody could have said it any better than Madonna. It takes one icon to know another. Did you know that Madonna and MJ were supposed to appear in the latter’s video of In the Closet? Madonna wanted to dress as a man and MJ to dress as a woman. Too bad, the concept didn’t sit too well with MJ so he did the video with Naomi Campbell instead. Long live the two great “M’s”—Madonna and Michael.

‘Dare to believe’

As a tribute to my all-time idol, let me share with you some of my fave MJ quotes: “In a world filled with hate, we must still dare to hope. In a world filled with anger, we must still dare to comfort. In a world filled with despair, we must still dare to dream. And in a world filled with distrust, we must still dare to believe. “I wake up from dreams and go, ‘Wow, put this down on paper.’ The whole thing is

Aside from Perry—an American singer-songwriter who started with gospel and country music before hitting the charts with the pop single I Kissed a Girl—other current and hot artists who have committed to perform are Arnel Pineda and Neal Schon, lead vocalist and guitarist-composer, respectively, of the band Journey, and JabbaWockeeZ, the all-male hip hop dance crew from California, four of whom are Fil-Americans. Another US-based artist, Nicole Scherzinger—lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls and whose father is Filipino— is reportedly fixing her schedule so she can be part of the concert. All of these artists, with the exception of Perry, have performed recently in Manila and were very much con-

cerned about the plight of flood victims. They were contacted by Rhiza Pascua, whose USbased Music Management International is teaming up with All Youth Channels (the company that owns MTV Philippines) to mount the fundraiser. “Although we want to make the concert as big as possible, the logistical expense is quite daunting,” says Francis Lumen of AYC. “One possible problem is the plane fare, although we hope

SSS opens mobile centers THE SOCIAL Security System (SSS) launched mobile centers in 13 cities and municipalities affected by Tropical Storm “Ondoy” to attend to the needs of members struggling to recover from one of the worst flooding disasters in decades, a top official said.

AFFECTED residents of Marikina and Rizal arrived in throngs to receive help from Globe.

Globe lends hand to victims GLOBE joins the whole nation in its massive effort to help typhoon “Ondoy” victims by providing relief assistance and free calls to communities affected by one of the worst storms to hit the country in 40 years. Globe, through its corporate social responsibility arm Globe Bridging Communities (Globe BridgeCom), donated P1 million each to ABS-CBN Foundation’s Sagip Kapamilya and GMA Kapuso Foundation. An additional P1 million was also donated to affected Gawad Kalinga communities. Singapore Telecommunications Ltd (Singtel), Globe’s Singapore partner announced that it will also donate P1 million to aid the victims of the tropical storm. Globe BridgeCom distributed relief packages that included food, water and other basic necessities to around 5,000 families in communities in Marikina and Rizal areas. Some 6,000 more packages were given to families in other affected communities. Around 640 Globe employee volunteers trooped to the evacuation centers to distribute the relief goods. And in cooperation with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), Globe set up Libreng Tawag Centers to enable the public to make free national

or international long distance calls. The Libreng Tawag stations were put up at the evacuation center in Ever Gotesco Mall in Cainta, and at the Barangka barangay hall and Leodegario Elementary School in Marikina. Libreng Tawag stations are also set up for the use of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) and relief workers at Camp Aguinaldo and the AFP Command Post at Ever Gotesco Cainta. Globe business centers at the Alabang Town Center, Festival Mall, Robinson’s Malate, SM Southmall, SM Mall of Asia, SM Bicutan, SM North Edsa, SM Fairview, Trinoma, Greenbelt 4, Park Square, SM Makati, Walter Mart in Bulacan, Metrotown Mall in Tarlac, NE Pacific Mall in Cabanatuan, SM Clark and Marquee Mall in Pampanga are now accepting relief goods which will be distributed to the typhoon victims. Globe is also helping the Philippine National Red Cross accept donations via its Donatea - L o a d s e r v i c e . G l o b e s u bs c r i b e r s c a n t e x t RED<space>AMOUNT to 2899. Donations may be in the amount of P5, P25, P50, P100, P300, P500, and P1,000. As of today, the public has donated over P2 million thru this facility.

P5M FOR ONDOY VICTIMS MEAD Johnson Nutrition (MJN) President and General Manager Paul Richards (left) hands over a P5-million check and boxes of Ceetrus ascorbic acid syrup to Sen. Richard Gordon, chairman of the Philippine National Red Cross, to support the relief efforts for victims of Typhoon ‘Ondoy.’ MJN also has a continuing corporate social responsibility program in depressed communities in cooperation with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and Kabisig ng Kalahi.

SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Romulo Neri said five fully-equipped service vehicles would get on the road around the National Capital Region and Rizal province to attend to members’ queries, give out forms and accept applications for benefits and loans. “We understand that many members in badly-hit areas right now can’t leave their homes to file applications directly at SSS offices, so we are bringing our services to them,”

he said, adding that the program would provide members access to SSS facilities. SSS has assigned a mobile center for each of the following cluster of areas: Marikina, San Mateo and Rodriguez; Cainta and Taytay; Taguig, Las Piñas and Parañaque; Tanay, Antipolo and Angono; and Pasig and Pateros. The pension fund also opened an action center at the lobby of its branch office in Marikina City. SSS Marikina

stopped operations last week after floods damaged the computers and branch equipment of the one-storey office. Neri said SSS had a surge in salary loan applications following the onslaught of Tropical Storm Ondoy, which caused widespread flooding in the main island of Luzon after it hit the country on Sept. 26. He said nearly 45,000 members have applied for early renewal of salary loans in the NCR after SSS liberalized its loan policies in calamity areas. “But SSS has been implementing measures and working overtime, even on weekends, to cope with the huge volume of transactions,” he said.

FREE SHOWER FOR ONDOY VICTIMS DZMM, ABS-CBN’s AM radio station based in Metro Manila, rejuvenated over 800 typhoon victims at the ULTRA evacuation center recently through the “Kapamilya, Shower Na” project. The project treated the evacuees to a 10-minute shower each, complete with free towel, soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant aboard a container van with makeshift shower cubicles. DZMM’s “Kapamilya, Shower Na,” which was conceptualized by anchor Ted Failon of Tambalang Failon at Sanchez, will continue to deliver this unique brand of public service to different evacuation

first set. “We found it difficult to adjust and execute our game plan

without a gym where we could practice regularly,” wika ni Adamson coach Dulce Pante. “She (Moralde) just arrived from the province. She probably didn’t expect that the games would be this competitive,” sabi ni Pante.

“Any team can beat any team in this league,” sagot ni San Miguel coach Siot Tanquingcen matapos siyang tanungin kung ano ang kanyang masasabi sa Beermen. “Every team beefed up in the off-season.
