kilos, ani LLDA chief Edgardo Manda. “I have made a strong recommendation to remove these people from the danger zones and not allow them to go back,” ani Manda hinggil sa 400,000

It showcased the creativity, innovation, and culinary skills of students to master the full delicious potential of umami. Umami, the scientifically-recognized and proven fifth basic taste alongside sweet, sour, bitter, and salty,

is the tasty, rich or savory taste that was first identified and isolated by Dr. Kikunae Ikeda of Tokyo Imperial University in 1908. The competition represents the cooperation of Ajinomoto Philippines Corp. and the Glutamate Association of the Philippines (GAP), the professional group of food health and nutrition experts, to highlight the deliciousness of umami as a basic taste and to celebrate the source of the taste—glutamate. Stars play real-life heroes to ‘Ondoy’ victims By Bayani San Diego Jr. and Marinel R. Cruz

T

HIS is a reality show, of stardom at its noblest. Kapuso and Kapamilya celebrities have been playing true-life heroes these past two weeks to countless compatriots devastated and displaced by Tropical Storm “Ondoy.”

Actor Dingdong Dantes realized the magnitude of the problem on Sept. 27, a day after the downpours that brought massive floods, during the GMA 7 telethon on the variety show SOP. Right after that show, he mobilized the youth leaders of his Yes Pinoy Foundation, which promotes scholarship programs. “But seeing the images of grief on TV,” he said, “we decided to join the relief operations.” Volunteers showed up at his doorstep and donations started pouring in. Apart from friends and relatives and fellow Kapuso stars Dennis Trillo, Gabby Eigenmann and Antonio Aquitania, members of the 3rd Technical Service Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines joined Dingdong in Mangga-

han, Pasig, on Monday, Sept. 28. The actor is a marine reserve officer. On Oct. 1, Marian Rivera, his screen partner, helped him distribute goods in Cainta. “Marian was very happy to help,” said Dingdong. “She worked tirelessly ... she was an asset to the team.” Dingdong ultimately set up the Tindig Pinoy Laban Kay Ondoy Relief Center. “The team is going back to Taytay and Cainta. We will continue our efforts long after the storms have left our shores,” he said.

Suited and ready ABS-CBN star Angel Locsin turned up at a relief center of the Philippine National Red Cross wearing a swimsuit under a loose-fitting shirt. The actress, a former member of the national swimming team, said

MASTER SHOWMAN THIS MONDAY on I-Witness, Sandra Aguinaldo presents the life of German Moreno through the eyes of his long-time friends and Philippine entertainment legends Dolphy, Gloria Romero, and Pilita Corrales. Join them as they recount the colorful story of Kuya Germs, from his humble beginnings as a theater curtain-puller during the 1940s up to his heydays as star discoverer in the That’s Entertainment. People from all corners of the industry have come to love Kuya Germs because of his generosity and kindness. Sandra also interviews Judy Ann Santos, Isko Moreno and Kuya Germs’ radio co-host Shalala and discovers how Kuya Germs has helped them in their respective careers. IWitness airs on Monday midnight after Saksi.

she was prepared to join rescue missions. “I came ready for deployment,” Angel said. But she was just as willing to help repack relief goods that were being dispatched that day. The next day, the actress visited the

Payatas dumpsite in Quezon City and donated goods to the residents. Angel also reportedly donated P600,000 to Sagip Kapamilya, an ABSCBN group tasked to address humanitarian crises caused by

emergencies.

Energy biscuits For one whole month, the United Nations World Food Program will give “energy biscuits” to 11,700 children under 5 years old, announced KC Concepcion, UN-WFP nation-

al ambassador. The UN also has sent 30 rubber boats and three helicopters for rescue operations and will donate generators to power up damaged hospitals, she added. KC has been very visible, coordinating

food brigades and personally helping distribute the goods in hard-hit communities.

The actor later participated in clean-up activities initiated by the GMA News and Public Affairs staff in Tumana, Marikina. With Reyes and other Kapuso stars, Richard also distributed relief packs in Marikina’s Nangka High School.

Network initiative Since Monday last week, Katrina Halili has been giving away clothes, pails and other necessities in Marikina and Taytay. Halili’s fellow Kapuso and Rosalinda co-stars Carla Abellana and Geoff Eigenmann delivered goods to Red Cross Alabang. Alfred Vargas conducted mass feeding and relief operations in Fairview, Quezon City. Vargas, who got stranded at the INQUIRER office in Makati af-

MARIAN Rivera and Dingdong Dantes ter a Read-Along session with street children at the height of “Ondoy” on Sept. 26, said he has lined up more activities in other affected areas this month. JC de Vera and Bubbles Paraiso volunteered at the Kapuso Foundation’s repacking satellite at the GMA 7 studios. On their own, Starstruck graduates Mark Herras, Rainier Castillo and Yasmien Kurdi

mounted distribution campaigns. Francine Prieto, whose mother is a cancer patient, nevertheless joined the Kapuso drive, along with Chynna Ortaleza, Iza Calzado and Kris Bernal in Rodriguez, Valenzuela, Malabon and Pasig.

Old and young Amalia Fuentes joined other actors from the Sampaguita, LVN and Premiere years in donating clothes and blankets to

flood victims. “The Balik Samahan group is organizing relief operations,” Amalia related. Jake Cuenca led the distribution of relief packages in Biñan, Laguna. Singer Pops Fernandez, BB Gandanghari, Bing Loyzaga and several young artists from Star Magic visited affected residents in Muntinlupa. Shaina Magdayao helped out in Payatas with fellow Kapamilya artists Piolo Pascual, Zanjoe Marudo and Maricar Reyes. Shaina also worked with Kris Aquino and Ruffa Gutierrez at a center in San Mateo, Rizal. Mellisa Ricks spent a day helping out at a Sagip Kapamilya center in Malabon. She was with Matt Evans, Vhong Navarro, EJ Falcon and veteran actress Nova Villa. “Walang maliit na tulong,” said Melissa. Singer Ogie Alcasid was inspired to write a song, as tribute to the resilience and generosity of Filipinos. “It’s titled, Kaya Natin ’To. I al-

ready made the demo,” he said. He envisions it as a We Are the World-type of fundraiser. “I hope to convince other artists to record the song with me, and give all proceeds to the flood victims.”

All-star benefit concert Also in the works, Ogie said, is an all-star benefit concert at the Araneta Coliseum on Nov. 14, similarly dubbed Kaya Natin ’To. “I hope it will become a unity concert, with Kapuso and Kapamilya artists participating.” Ogie’s girlfriend, singer Regine Velasquez, had gone straight to a wholesale supermarket the day after “Ondoy,” to buy groceries for distribution as relief packs. “On her own, she went around different sites in Balara, Quezon City, near her house,” Ogie said. There are many realizations for Filipinos after the storm, he stressed, the most important of which is disaster preparedness. “We can no longer take things for granted.”

“The compassion shown by Filipino and foreign sportsmen and athletes toward the victims of Ondoy tugs at the heart,” wika ni PSA president Teddyvic Melendres na siya ring Inquirer sports editor. “We didn’t have to ask; they learned about

‘Love of Ninoy’ GAYA ng mga nakalipas na taon, masayang idinaos ang PBA pre-season press conference last Wednesday, October 9 sa Diamond Hotel, Manila. This was to usher in the league’s 2009-2010 season under the chairmanship of Burger King’s Lito Alvarez , who had many difficult questions to answer during the open forum with media. Love and service for flag and country daw ang dahilan kung bakit

IN HUDDLE Beth Celis [email protected] Smart Gilas ang pinili niya. "Love of flag and country? Baka love of Ninoy,” sabi nila.

Japeth. I have a strong feeling though, na nagkasundo na sila.

EAGLES, EAGLETS BACK-2-BACK CHAMPS

“We came out hungry right from the very start, we were on attack mode right from the very start,” sabi ni Ateneo coach Norman Black. “We played defense which is something we didn’t do in Game 2. We came out with a lot more energy.” “Maybe we were not ready enough to tackle the game of this magnitude,” ani ng luhaang UE coach Lawrence Chongson.
