Toastmasters International is a leader in helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. The nonprofit organization now has nearly 235,000 members in 12,000 clubs. There is no instructor; participants practice and learn skills by preparing a speech or serving as a leader in a role.
Whole newsletter has been redesigned and now uses style similar to the one of the Toastmaster magazine. I want to encourage you to write articles for next issues. All themes and subjects will be appreciated.
WORD OF PRESIDENT Štěpán Stehlík, President of our club, wrote his word named 'What do green apples, proud horses and experienced matadors have in common?' Read on the page 2.
WHAT DO GREEN APPLES, PROUD HORSES AND EXPERIENCED MATADORS HAVE IN COMMON? Once upon time during drinking my afternoon tea, I was thinking why our toastmaster club is so pleasant place to meet, where every member can feel warm and pleasant atmosphere and why we have not got serious problems with lack of members as the other clubs. I have many times realized what problems might be sometimes in society between young and old generations. Young people are often denoted as hotheaded youngsters with lack of experience and with excessive self-confidence. On the other hand, the elders are mostly viewed as slow thinking, hesitant and boring people who should stay at home and rather do not influence public events… As well as any society also in our club we have some age-structure of our members stretching from the
young green apples over the middle aged proud horses to the oldest, well experienced matadors. Despite of the society stereotypes, we are very happy that our agestructure is so rich and we can only profit from it! In our club we do not know the inter-generational conflicts, which I had sketched out in the introduction. Our toastmastering connects us firmly, the younger members enriches the older ones and vice versa. Younger green apples profit from the well experienced, wise matadors, and the enthusiasm and creativity of the young members enrich the matadors. Middle aged proud horses at the same time give the final shape to our club environment. Our club is bottom-less pot of boiling ideas, thoughts, inventions
and kindness which is provided to everyone, who cares for it and needs it. That is why our club is so nice place to meet, where everyone feels good and it is also illustration how initially incompatible green apples, proud horses and wise matadors make sense together if you visit Pardubice enthusiasts. At the bottom line I would like to thank all of you, the members, the green apples, the proud horses and the matadors for great effort you put every Monday, every week, every month and every year to keep our club running. In spite of our difficult personal lives, I admire your infinitive will and natural buoyancy. This makes our club unique! ~ Štěpán Stehlík, President

WORD OF VP EDUCATION When I joined the club and received my New Member Kit I remember that I just read the title of the two manuals – Competent Communicator and Competent Leader – and put the second aside. That´s not for me, I said to myself. Now I regret it because working on Competent Leader does so much for you if you are a newcomer : it helps you to orient in all meeting roles and officer positions – what to do? how? why? But it is not just a “guide”, it enables you to participate on meetings and fullfill more difficult roles such as an Evaluator, or a Grammarian from the very beginning.
No matter in which stage of your Toastmaster life you are, try it! Just bring your CL manual to every meeting and you will be surprised how quickly you will proceed. Or study it in advance and then sign yourself for a role for next meeting. You will have each role evaluated by a fellow Toastmaster. And remember that the skills you will learn listening, planning, motivating, organising, and positive thinking - can be applied (also) outside Toastmasters. ~ Hana Pozdílková, VPE
