April 2019 This newsletter catches everyone up on February and March activities. We had several tournaments to report on in the following pages. Our next tournament was supposed to be in Ohio, but there were less than 6 teams in our division and the last tournament hosted by this organization we heard was completely un-organized. We didn’t want to flop in Ohio, so we made some moves to have RAVE play closer to home in Buffalo. The team will be staying at Niagara Falls so we can visit one of our natural wonders but also have some off court fun. This will be followed by the WEVA bid in Rochester should we be invited. The top 8 teams in the WEVA region get invited to compete for 2 bids to Nationals. We are currently ranked 5th in WEVA’s 17s but we appealed for a recount as we don’t think they gave us the tournament weighting they were supposed to. (Each tournament has a level and also if you play at a higher age bracket you get more points.) More to follow on that plus more tournaments to place highly at which will help our ranking! If you want to understand the WEVA rankings and how they do it, go to: https://www.wevavolleyball.org/J-Tour-R.asp

Meredith Conklin Mer is a Jr. at Bloomfield High School. After high school she plans to study music therapy because she can make people happy with her passion. She is considering attending Nazareth College. Off the court, she mostly plays music and listens to music. Any tournaments she missed was due to her love of music. Her favorite quote is “The noblest art is that of making others happy.” If she had $500k, she would pay for college first, then build a house. Blue is her favorite color.

Tessa Edwards Tessa is a Jr. at Wayne High School. She wants to pursue a career as a physician’s assistant because she likes to help people. She is considering attending Coastal Carolina or Ithaca University. Her favorite color is peach. If she happened upon $500k she would buy a Mercedes Benz. She likes to watch movies in her spare time. Her favorite quote is from Han Solo, “it’s not my fault.”

Madison Chacchia Maddie is a Jr. at Wayne High School. She plans to study to be a physician’s assistant because she loves working with people and helping them. NFVB Frost

Feb 16

We came in 2nd of 8 teams and were defeated in the finals of the gold bracket. In total, we won 7 sets and lost 3.

Mizuno Boston Feb 22-24 Festival

We played in the highest division to give ourselves a challenge. Our first travel tournament was just that! We saw new teams, teams that didn’t make any mistakes and in the end we placed 20th of 28 teams. Most sets were close and a few less unforced errors would likely have found us winning as many as we lost. We had a great Italian dinner on Saturday night!

VFX Winter Challenge

March 2-3

We won the silver medal in this tournament placing 9th of 28 teams.

Irish Rumble

March 1617

Happy St. Patty’s Day! The girls had some Irish spirit displayed in the form of temporary tattoos and did a nice job in this tournament! We placed 3rd of 27 teams in the second highest level of play. Despite bad referees we managed to keep our cool and ride into the gold bracket, being defeated by Highline Aspire (in semis) with a whiny coach who complained about a few calls that didn’t go her way. (And then a few did after complaining!)
