Calendar Social networking is the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities or a neighborhood. Although social networking is possible in person, it is most popular online. This is because the internet is filled with millions of individuals who are looking to meet other internet users, to gather and share first-hand information or experiences about any number of topics, from golfing to gardening developing friendships, or to start a professional relationship. Social networking websites function like an online community of internet users. Depending on the website many of these online community members share a common interest such as hobbies, religion, or politics. The friends that you can make are just one of the many benefits to social networking online. Another one of those benefits includes diversity, because the internet gives individuals from all around the world access to social networking sites. Not only will you make new friends, but you just might learn a thing or two about new cultures or new languages. There are dangers associated with social networking. The most prevalent danger involves online predators or individuals who claim to be someone that they are not. Just like you're advised when meeting strangers at clubs, school, or work, you are also advised to proceed with caution online. Just use common sense and listen to your inner voice; it will tell you when something doesn't feel right! The following online social networking websites are very popular. MySpace, FriendWise, FriendFinder, Yahoo! 360, Facebook, Orkut, and Classmates to name a few.

President Obama Speaks To Students “Who wouldn’t want the President of the United States to look you in the eye and say stay in school,” said Nadia Hionides, Principal of The Foundation Academy. That view is why Hionides had no qualms about showing President Barack Obama’s speech to her students Tuesday. She did note the speech was voluntary. More than 100 high school students at Foundation Academy packed a school theater to watch the President. Several students spoke with Action News after the 17 minute speech. “I didn’t want to do my work and play around and now that I saw [the speech] that I think I need to stick with all my goals,” said ninth grader, Sharmaine Bennett. “I thought it was a real good speech to watch because I thought the message was what you do today dictates your future,” said fellow student, Brewer Pierce. The students were aware of the controversy over the remarks; how some feared the president would push a political agenda, and how many parents threatened to keep kids home. So did they think the speech was politic-free? “All politics aside everybody should see this,” said Pierce. “[Education] is an issue that’s not about politics. I think every political party agrees education is one of the most important things in this country.” Ninth grader Chris Wilcher chimed in. “All the speech was doing was showing us that [students] are the future,” he said. More lesson than propaganda was what Principal Hionides expected from the president’s remarks and she felt the speech a lesson she has no problem teaching. --Mike Tolbert Action News

Latin America Did the Maya of Mesoamerica discover geometry by observing the indigenous rattlesnake, crotalis durissus? Was Malinche, Cortez's interpreter, a traitor or did she use her influence in the interests of the Aztec? Should an illegal Mexican immigrant, a recent college graduate, be deported even though she has lived only in the U.S. since being brought here as a young child? How does the magical realism of Laura our HILI-MASC 1-4 students will explore in the coming Esquivel's fiction illuminate the rich and vital culture months as they study not only Mexico but many other ---KLSH of Mexico? These questions are samples of the many regions of Latin America.

The better you treat someone the better they will treat you. I know this to be true. Why is it so hard to do? It is especially hard with the ones that are most important to us? October is a great time to visit how we do relationships. Perhaps if we reflect on this now, we will have productive family time during the coming holidays. We can grow in peace and love toward each other. I am planning on continuing to fight with my pride. I know that is the enemy of demonstrated love. Christ loves me, better than I love myself. He demonstrated that through the ultimate sacrifice, Himself. Thank God for that. "Let your conversations be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you know how to answer everyone" Colossians 4:6

S c i e n c e a n d I n t e l l i g e n c e " A powerful aspect of intelligence is the ability to solve problems collaboratively. Individuals and groups incorporate knowledge passed along from others" (internet sources included) "into new problem solutions and innovtions" (Andrew Metzoff, Science News Magazine). This quote is just a reminder to us all that scientific research has and continues to support the educational choice you made by attending the Foundation Academy. The foundation Academy uses Project Based Learning because we know that the best learning is not done as an individual, but as a group. Congratulations for continuing to understand and support 21st Century thinking. --Nadia

She created a snail house for her snail and placed it in the triangular garden outside the classroom. The next day William and Joshua found a huge grasshopper and presented it to all their friends. They later spent their afternoon center time engaged in several insect books. Aevn collected a few snails from the backyard pond to put

Roses are red Violets are blue This rainy day Is not a clue. Outside we step In a mud puddle And it’s all wet Like a bubble. In the street Birds get wet While we eat We don’t fret. When love goes away You don’t find more In the old days But no others roar. When you see a lurking shadow It means you’re not aware But you can’t play with dough Especially out in the air. I can’t hear you What did you say? You said you look like poo Instead of spray. So roses are red Violets are blue Now remember this isn’t your bed Or your old shoe. By Meredith Dolan – 8th grade

North Star Autism Support – Special Counseling for Parents and Families

By D’Amisha Sullivan -- 8 grade

By Lisa Amato North Star Autism Support is now offering supportive counseling for parents as well as consultation services to guide treatment planning. Navigating autism is not for the faint of heart: it demands strength, commitment, patience, perseverance, and most of all, steadfast love. We all get lost at times, frustrated with regressions, confused about treatment options, angry with our spouse, worried about money, and perhaps demanding too much of our neurotypical children. This fog can leave a family, and a child, adrift. North Star was established to provide a beacon, a sense hope and direction for families in need. As a licensed psychologist and mother of an autistic child, I have discovered that resilience in the face of adversity leads to better health outcomes. Equipped with the education and training to meet this challenge in my own family, I am dedicated to helping other parents in our autism community. The mission of North Star is to provide direction and promote resilience for autism families, improving all of our children's outcomes.

High School HiLi: Mr. Todd and Senora Valdes have been working with the juniors and seniors the past two weeks on a mini project about the government economic program, Cash for Clunkers. Students have been working in groups familiarizing themselves by reading numerous articles, taking notes, writing essays and presenting their findings. We are moving into curriculum the week of September 20th with economics, history and language arts.
