Also called Cartesian coordinate system after Rene Descartes The system is based on a grid and every point can be identified using two numbers, specifically the x- and ycoordinates

Every point’s location is identified with respect to a fixed point called the origin Each point is described by an ordered pair (x,y) where x is the distance along the x-axis from the origin and y is the distance along the y-axis from the origin A positive number corresponds to going up (for y direction) or right (for the x direction)
